2 Video cards at once?

Can i use both an AGP and a PCI video card at the same time to power two monitors?

I just bought an ATI 9250 and when i have it plugged in my machine won't boot (bleh on ATI) so now im going to return the ATI and grab a cheap GeForce PCI card. Am I wasting my money or will I be able to use the AGP and PCI cards at the same time?

yes, you can use pci vid cards along agp/pcie cards.

Works like any other vid card, just dont expect a pci card to be very good tho : p

Well i picked up a GEforce FX 5500 256mb card but still have the same problem, the machine freezes during bootup.

Well, you can use an AGP and PCI card at the same time, however, using an ATI and Nvidia card in the same machine is a very very VERY bad idea. Use the same brand for both, or a cheap off-brand for the PCI card. Or, get a kick-a** single card with two outputs.

Any ideas why my machine would freeze on the WinXP boot up screen when i run the computer with the PCI card installed?

Two cards at the same time, man.

Sounds like a driver conflict. Try booting into safemode and reinstalling the drivers that way. I doubt it's a hardware conflict, but it's a possbility. What are the exact models of your two video cards, and what are the specs on the rest of your computer?

ive had 2 nvidias freak out when being in the same machine and ive had a nvidia and a ati in the same machine with no problems, theres really no book about this but most likley its

Look for and download Driver Cleaner Pro 1.4. Follow the instructions and clean out your old drivers and cab files. Then install the latest NGO Optimized drivers instead of those icky OEM drivers. Have fun.

Rather than flood the forums with data that can't really help the situation, have you looked at your nVidia card carefully? If it's got both VGA and DVI outputs, you can usually use them both at the same time as dual displays. (This is what I'm doing with my GeForce 6600 256Mb, excepting I'm not messing around and have an AGP8X version.)

Windows doesn't exactly handle dual displays 100% properly, but it works well enough. All you need is either a second monitor that has a DVI cable, or a DVI->VGA adapter and a normal second monitor. Windows will notice the new monitor on the next boot. This is much less hassle than trying to convince a motherboard that may not actually support having two VGA devices installed (hint hint!) that it should be able to use them both.

What chipsets are the the cards using?

hmmm.. Chipset? they are both NVidia cards.. is that the chipset?

I've decided to just reinstall windows and hope its not a hardware problem.

They'll be a geforce chipset, (nvidia) and it should be possible to dual-head off the main one. I doubt reinstalling windows will be terribly helpful, but you can try it. You may need an adapter for DVI to VGA.... it should have come with the card. Windows handles multi-monitor setups just fine.

I reinstalled windows, and booted up with the PCI card first and installed the nvidia drivers. It still doesnt work. My computer is not compatible with 2 video cards it seems.

Ah well, guess I can blow that $107 usd on some new shoes

I had tried to have two sound cards in at once, both had the same chipsets, even though they where different brands models ect, only after digging around found they had the same, my pc didnt take too kindly to it lol, hated it in fact, I dont know if that would be the same in gfx cards, I would presume so? Does the machine startup? or freeze after a while or?

There are many reasons it may not work, one may be power. Your power supply may not be able to handle two video cards. I have found that some combinations of cards will not work because one of the cards uses the PCI bus for some forms of rendering, usually an ATI All in Wonder. AIW cards will not work with a PCI card at all, even another ATI.

The newer cards like the 6600 have two connections on the back that allow two monitors to be connected that make a second video card unnecessary.

Well, i bought a GeForce 7800 GS OC 256mb, and it came with a VGA/DVI plug so now the card runs both monitors.

It does seem that 2 video cards in the same machine does not work..atleast not in my machine.
