Am i correct in assuming the following:
When I send an IM to someone in game, it is immediately added to the chatlog for that person, and the date and time that the file was last modified should match the time that the last message was transmitted ( im from the UK so I have to convert the last message time to GMT from SL time to get the correct modified time )
If this is true, then what if the modifed time doesnt match the last message time, i.e by several hours, does this mean the message log has been tampered with.
I did check all of my IM's and the modifed time matches the last message time of most of my logs. give or take a minute or so.
Just trying to get info on the process SL uses to handle logs.
Also on the properties page from inside windows got by right clicking the logfile and selecting properties....does the modified time and date mean that its the time that the file was last modified/edited
ty in advance

The OS file timestamp is when the file was last modified/updated.
That said, that isn't necessarily going to always jive with any date/time info IN the chatlog. One is maintained by the OS, the other is maintained by SL. Yes, if something opened your chatlog.txt file in write mode, wrote to it, and closed it, the modified timestamp would be updated. SL may do this itself, as the timestamp is updated when closed, not necessarily only when the file is written. In fact, if SL crashes, or the OS crashes, the timestamp may not get updated at all, if the file was still open when it did so.

thanks...the only problem i see with what you say is that i've sent im's to a few people.....in the natural course of using sl, and in all cases straight after sending the IM i check the chatlog (before closing the IM window)...the modified date and time from properties always matches the time of the last message sent and the last message sent is always the one i sent before checking...so it seems SL saves the file as soon as the message is sent....so to me that means the last message sent time should be the same as modified time
This may be off of course due to lag etc..but i think if it was several hours different or even a different date, then its safe to assume that the message has been modified.
