I have been experiencing a problem with the textures I upload being corrupted. They are fine on my end, and look good in the preview before uploading, but after they arrive and display in SL I see random lines of color in my images. When I uploaded my first few it only happened to one, but last night I had to upload 18 times to get 3 textures without any errors.
Based on my tests, it appears that there is no error checking on upload and a missed packet can destroy an image. Is there an option in SL that I can use to increase the reliability of the transfers?

The only thing I can suggest is to pay attention to your packet loss when uploading to see if there's a certain percentage loss after which you get corrupted images. I've never had that happen to me. I've had my uploads fail by never completing but if they complete I've never had any image corruption. That's really strange.

Packet loss seems to be the problem. There is no way for me to predict when it wil happen though. What surpised me was the apparent lack of error correction on the upload. Especially since we pay for these uploads, I would expect the stream to be reliable. If a packet gets dropped in an animation or sound it could potentially cause problems worse than just strange magenta lines in the image.

I'm having this problem as well. I switched from wireless to wired connection and tried again (3 total tries). It still comes in as smoke and not the actual image despite the preview showing it correctly. I watched my stats the whole time during the upload and the packet loss was 0.4%. That should be tolerable.
The image is a 512 x 256 pixel targa with no transparencies. Is there a problem with certain sizes or something like that? Any other suggestions before I go broke?
