i have just upgraded my pc to a 64 bit processor and therefore have installed Windows XP Pro X64 but the whole game is running very very slow. I am told by Linden support that SL is not compatible with Windows XP Pro X64? has any one out there whi has a 64 bit pc encountered this or do i have to cancel my membership?

The vast majority of people with 64 bit processors will be using normal XP. Hopefully someone can help but if not then if you have a copy or normal XP just install that and job's sorted :)

i don't think that you should cancel your membership. i have the same problem at times. there isn't much that is compatable with x64. you can still play the game correct? I think that you will be better off going back to a 32 bit version of windows. There just ins't enough support out for x64 yet. That is my personal reccomendation. That is what i did.

To add to what everyone else said, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Microsoft to bug fix XP64. If you must have 64 bit Windows, wait for Vista. For now, like everyone else said, go to 32 bit XP.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 cpu, Windows XP Pro 64, Nvidia 6800GS w/256 mb and 1 gb system ram. SL ran fine until I dropped a new drive in and did a fresh install with latest drivers, specificaly Nvidia drivers 91.31 that came out June 23. SL crashes on log in now.

Previously I was using Nvidia drivers 81.98 and later updated those to 64.25 and still had a working system. There was no performance problem from what I could see. I used to run SL on a P4 3.0ghz with an ATI 9800 with 128 mb ram and the hardware I have now is faster.

I can only guess that trying an older driver will work, I havent' tried it myself yet.

But to answer you're question, yes SL will run under Win XP Pro64.

I had XP64 installed for about 2 months. I had more compatability issues then I can count. The suggestion about uninstalling X64 and going to XP is really a good one. At least from my experience.
BTW. I also do not recommend beta testing the new Windows either. Second Life was at crawl speed for me when I installed it.
Just FYI/heads up. :D

Ok, I said I'd report my views on X64 and here they are as far as I can tell from my so far short run. I have no problems with SL at all but outside SL there are interface and graphic issues. Most noticable is the way windows don't move smoothly anymore but they spaz out when trying to drag them.

why wait for vista? SL isnt going to work on vista, not until they upgrade from OpenGL, and thats not happening anytime soon.

Innacurate on a couple points.

OpenGL, Direct3d... They're totally different graphics APIs and would likely require some major overhaul. So it's not really an "upgrade". There's no reason to replace OpenGL.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct3D_vs._OpenGL

Second, where's your information that SL won't work on Vista? Are you referring to rumor that Microsoft was dropping OpenGL support? That's also incorrect, since OpenGL will continue to work and be supported.

And in fact dropping OGL support in windows would be verging on business suicide. About the only applications regularly using D3D are non-portable Games.

ANYTHING that's cross platform or been around a good time uses OGL for a variaty of reasons.
