What tool is used to convert avi/mpg (divx, vcd, svcd) into .mov for SL1.6 movie streaming?

Quicktime can play any of those filetypes so converting into a .mov is unnecessary.

Quicktime can't play .AVI files - they need to be converted first.

I use ImToo MPEG Encoder myself - i think its around $30.

I've played .avi files on my PC with Quicktime for 3+ years now and have had them play on my Mac for 9 yrs.

I've always used Quicktime Pro ($29.95 from apple.com).. so have had no problems exporting .mov to .avi either (useful for we based folk to eventually convert .mov to WinMedia).

Yes, QuickTime can play AVIs and no, QuickTime cannot play AVIs.

It all depends on the codecs used in creating those AVIs. And there are quite a few floating around, several of which are popular but not included in the standard QT distro.

I would agree though, upgrading to QT Pro for $30 is a painless and more or less inexpensive way to get export/conversion support, as well as fullscreen playback if you watch a lot of QT-playable movies.
