Crashing on Upload=because of file browsing?

So I upgraded my computer to an Athlon 64 machine with 1gig of RAM(and unfortunately WinXP SP2). THE only time I really crash these days is because I'm uploading a file.. and ONLY while I'm browsing for the file. It's like accessing the HDD is making SL tank. This includes, on occasion:
- switching directories by mouse,
- typing in the name of the file to bring a drop down of related files and picking one,
- "searching" the current directory via wildcards... etc.

I see most crashes are related to video, and I have a Radeon 9800 pro 128 using Catalyst drivers... but I don't THINK that's my problem. I'm going to try the ATI drivers released on the 13th to see if that helps at all, but I wanted to see if anyone else had an idea of why the file menu dialog is what's borking SL.
