The Second Life grid went down this morning for what appears to be software failure rather than hardware. We expect it to be down for a couple of hours still.

For some odd reason I am unable to post to the Announcements forum so I'm posting here and the General forum.

Thanks for letting us know Andrew!

One suggestion - is it possible to update the status page at www.secondlife.com/status ?
Last I checked, it still says SL is up.

Thanks again, good luck with fixing the grid:-)

would tend to agree... new people to sl will see the maintenance message in sl and visit the status page, only to find it stays SL is open, adding to the confusion.

I guess what you mean about the problem not being the hardware is that the huge network of machines is intact .... the boxes themselves are still running, the routers and switches are still operational, and the network cabling hasn't caught fire. :)

This makes me wonder what the global software problem is though, since the boxes will be running their own operating systems software quite independently of each other. In other words, what aspect of the applications layer that rides on top of the O/S and glues all the boxes together into the SL grid failed today?

It's one of the trickier aspects of creating a large network dedicated to a single application to get it to operate resiliently in the presence of faults. Is there graceful degradation in the SL grid design? It would appear not, if a software fault somewhere in the system has brought the entire grid down.

just a quick suggestion guys,......since alot of people check the events from the web...
when its known we are going down or are down for the moment could it be inserted into the event schedule so plans could be changed or undone?
with a known down time it could be inserted from the start time and inserted in each hour as downtime and then as the estimated time for return to service approaches it could be inserted as such?
just an idea....
hugglies..
now where do you go for fiending for your SL?
Sangi

To use the off-this-planet phraseology of management ....

"There is no process for this yet."

:)

LOL, I laugh as a defence mechanism. I think I've seen the insides of too many large companies. :-(

What it boils down to is, LL appear not to have any sort of official customer relations policy nor front end staff. And I'd be very careful about asking for either of those, because I'm not sure that having it would be any help to us out here in customer land --- it can turn into an exercise in Teflon coating, and that's bad news.

Yes, the scant info we get is not great nor timely. It does appear to be honest at least.
