Hi, need some help here.

My parent's just upgraded from dialup (the devil) to DSL. They connected their main computer up to the modem and everything was working great. When they connected to the router it screwed something up in the computer. Now, when ever they open up any browser it just crashes. They've tried unhooking the router and connecting directly from the modem, same thing. Tried connecting with dialup, same thing. My mom mentioned something about TCP/IP network Trasport Not Installed. I wish I could tell you more but I live 350 miles away and don't have access to their computer. :(

Their computer is very old. Win98 (ACK) (Not trying to connect to SL through this PC so don't worry ;))

I don't know much about networking. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW. The other computer that is connected with the router is working fine.

You might go to to start -> run -> type in command.com and try to ping something to see if they can even get out to the Internet. It could be just the browser having the problems and crashing.

If you can't ping anything and they have the Windows 98 disk you could always go to control panel -> network and remove the TCP/IP protocol, restart, and reinstall TCP/IP by going to Add -> Protocol -> Microsoft -> TCP/IP and it'll ask you to reboot. (If it doesn't go ahead and reboot anyway)

If you want to narrow the browser out of the picture you could always send them the small setup files for Firefox or Netscape through email. Have them install an alternate browser until a fix for IE can be found.

Oh and if it says something about missing the transport files does it give them the option to add it?

Just some things off the top of my head to help narrow things down. Sucks you are so far away .. dealing with family over the phone for computer problems is sometimes rough :)

They use Firefox. They have tried to use both IE and Firefox with the same results. I'll try to walk them through the other stuff though. And we'll see what happens.

Thank you Dan for your help. My mom is very greatful. Saved her a bunch of money because she didn't have to have a tech guy come out and do it.

Some one else had had her do the same thing except didn't tell her to reboot inbetween delete and install. It made all of the difference in the world.

Again, Thanks a bunch!

Rule of thumb for Win98: Any time you make a change to something, reboot.

Exception: Don't completely remove Communications from Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup, and then reboot. You'll have to dump into Safe Mode to get back into Windows if you do. oO

Second Life is not compatible with Windows 98.
[EDIT: Nevermind, I see you're not trying to run SL on that machine.]

SL may not be compatible with Win98, but that doesn't mean it won't run. I've been using Win98SE (and Linux) to run SL since I started.
