A friend of mine just bought a new HP Notebook model dv9402us running Vista. When exiting SL she gets the blue screen of death which then reboots back up to Vista.
Anyone have any ideas about this problem.
(I am writing to help her with the technical stuff)

Really no clue, but it might be the Vista thing. I have an HP dv8000 centrino duo core and never had a problem with it. Do a search on Vista and you might be able to figure something out. Good luck hun.

A) SL and vista are always an iffy combo.
B) If she's getting BSOD then it might be a driver issue (I'm guessing graphics since it's a laptop).

pc specs always help, couldnt dig up a page with HP model number to see how its buildt.
if its a ati vid card, you'd want win xp , not vista , on the other hand if its a intel vid card , you better return it since it wont run with SL.

Since the introduction of XP, the OS was developed to 'prevent' the BSOD, by having 'protected areas of memory' that keep the OS and programmes seperated. BSOD is caused by programmes either not giving up memory to the OS, or taking 'reserved' memory away from the OS, either senerio would cause the OS to fail and crash. I personally set my system to always keep the kernel core programmes in memory, with 2gb to play with, I can afford that luxury. My system never fails to BSOD, the misbehaving programme always fails before the OS. I don't trust Vista, when you consider most of the spyware installed is classed as legitimate with a Micorsoft/Holywood stamp of approval. I certainly don't want any system that has to report on my headphones direct to Microsoft, to see if they are 'compatible', then shuts down my soundboard because it reports that they are not and that I should DEMAND a compatible set from my maunfacturer.. never heard anything so ridiculous in all my years in computing.

WOW! Didn't know that about Vista. That is certainly intrusive! Next M$ will have Vista place you under arrest for some violation of their rules. Can this feature be shut off in Vista so it does not do this reporting and taking action on its own?

When i recently went to get my new laptop (an HP9000 2gig nVidia) I asked the seller about Getting XP installed over Vista. I'd heard about difficulties with vista running SL.
The only option they would allow in that regard was IF I bought the laptop first, they would TRY to put XP on it.
I opted for the above mentioned system as it had XP already on board.
BTW, it runs SL beatifully( sometimes even running two AVs at once ).

From: Electron Cleanslate WOW! Didn't know that about Vista. That is certainly intrusive! Next M$ will have Vista place you under arrest for some violation of their rules. Can this feature be shut off in Vista so it does not do this reporting and taking action on its own? What Vista is checking for, is any device that allows for making ilegal copies.. I'm assuming it considered my headphone socket/headphones as being not what they are, and some 3rd party device plugged into that outlet, that would allow me to circumnavigate the copy protection and record. If you read the reports on Vista, and the dross that Microsoft speel out, they have had issues regarding HDTV and BlueRay devices not working. One technology Professor wrote, how he purchased a new 2,000$ system, which had a blueray player and a GC that supported HDTV output, he plugged in his HDTV screen, and Vista rejected the whole system as being non-compliant with the copyright laws. He stated that no other device was connected to the system, that would make the system believe he had a 3rd party copying device interlinked... just the PC and the TV screen... perhaps he has the same headphones I have.... . He has been trying to sue Microsoft for providing software that states it is HDTV and BlueRay compatible. There are many other examples on the internet of such cases. XP will reign on my system, even long after Microsoft stop supporting it in 2011. Then I will think very seriously about abandoning Microsoft products and go over the Lunix.. assuming Microsoft hasn't made deals with all the Lunix software houses like RedHat, to install copy protection code in line with Vista...
