I know a few SLers have gotten SL running under Linux. I am running Ubuntu 5.0 (Debian based) and I have P2P and WineX 3.3.1 and 3.2.1 installed currently. Second Life won't install, It keeps asking me for some Plug-ins directory. What is this directory I need?

I know that later versions of 1.5 needed a FAT32-formatted partition to be set up as the Windows temp directory; that might be it. Other than that, I don't know what to say, as I haven't been able to get 1.6 to run under Linux.

Install using CEDEGA 4.3 run using WINEX 3.x.x
I use Point2Play to manage the emulator versions. 1.5x worked perfect 1.6x can only be run in a virtual wine created window.
I just told the p2p installer to use cedega 4.3 then after everything is installed I changed the settings so that the game would launch with WINEX. The game comes up right away.
Some people have had sucess tricking the game to run in native windowed mode.
Once everything is set up correctly it works perfectly you get a fully featured program except for quicktime streaming video.

Well installing it under 4.3 worked I just can't get it to run under 3.3.1. When I tried to run it my system froze up and I had to manually restart.

From: Amber Lehane Well installing it under 4.3 worked I just can't get it to run under 3.3.1. When I tried to run it my system froze up and I had to manually restart. It seemed to have issues with running fullscreen, and at some resolutions I can't get it to run.. however it works fine for me with a virtual wine desktop at 1024x768 other 3.x.x versions might give you better milage. (eventually went into a 3.2.x version to correct settings.. interesting in that version it would NOT run in fullscreen mode, but had other conflicts on my system, but did let me turn shiny objects on) Also quicktime works, just install apple's quicktime within the sane "app" on Point2Play with the newest wine version.. you may want to run the installer in a virtual desktop. (since it will black out the screen otherwise) I was lucky most of this just seemed to work for me.. until I started changing SL's settings.. but it meant I had a way of getting it back to a working state.
