Ok, I'm not going to claim to know anything about computers, but I'll give this a shot. I have a friend, who has a network of two pcs on a router and she and her husband are trying to play SL together. They have a static IP, cable connection, Windows XP Pro, a 4 port Linksys router.....other info I can find out if needed. What's happening is whenever he's logged in, she crashes..and vis versa. Any suggestions would be great Thanks so much!

From: Electra Stryker 4 port Linksys router *cough* That said, (heh) you may be able to get it to work by either launching SL at the command line or altering the shortcuts to add "-port 13000" to one and "-port 13001" to the other. That may work. Basically, the problem is that Linksys' NAT and UDP stuff is, well... crap. Upgrading to another brand (SMC, Dlink and Netgear all reportedly work fine) is another possibilty, if the port thing doesn't work.

Router Settings...

Okay, first off:
Does the Linksys Router have the newest firmware installed? They should check this, and download/install the newest firmware from the Linksys website.
If that doesn't solve the problem, they need to make sure that they can both browse the web at the same time - to ensure basic router functionality. They should have NAT turned on, and probably DHCP turned on (that would be the simplest/standard way; and is the default for most of these routers). These two settings will ensure that both machines are getting unique, non-conflicting IP addresses and that the Router can properly route the UDP data from the servers to each of their home machines.
Feel free to post more details if they're still having problems after they have gone through these steps.
Take care,

Catherine's suggestion works. To expand on it:
You only have to do this in the second, third, fourth computers. Leave primary as is.
Right click the Second Life icon on your desktop
Go to the shortcut box
It reads: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\newview.exe"
Add -port 13010 (increment port number if you have more than two PCs on the network, for example second PC is 13010, third pc 13011 and so on)
It should now read: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\newview.exe" -port 13010
Apply
OK
Start Second Life
Every time there is a new release of SL you will have to redo the procedure as the icon gets reset.
Enjoy!
