Update 12/05/07.. We have a current ticket for my lady with Support. And, we are getting some help finally. There were several items suggested for testing and recovery, but we had tried all those before. Today, we were asked to use the BETA grid to see if we could get the inventory from there. Nothing, did not work. We reported that to Linden Labs and await further help. I believe they will need to get the backup inventory from their disks and servers, and replace hers with the backup. That's what we are waiting for.. it's been going on since 11/25, way to long and too much work for this effort. (small deep sigh)..

Below are some of the facts of a huge inventory loss from 11/25. We are just BASIC, so I didn't know until today we could file SUPPORT ticket, which I just did. I hear they may help us, or just ignore it. I don't know.. this is our first need for help.

If ANYONE can think of things I can/should try, please let me know. We thought of hiring a person to come find the "inventory" if it is in the house or rug??? -- or the property somehow. I don't see how, but maybe it's still "there" somehow. The rug seems a likely spot but transparent and beacons shows nothing, but I don't know what I'm looking for :( ..maybe I'll take it up to skybox rez and examine it piece by piece..

Sign me.. Desperate for Inventory Recovery..

Best regards,

Description

Updated: 11/30/07.. We filed a basic ticket, and it was in progress. My name was used to file the ticket, and I upgraded to PREMIUM account to get some support.

Today, Frontier Linden closed the case/ticket today, said my partner has to file all details (START ALL OVER :() ..so, that's what we'll do. They said they might be able to help her, IF and WHEN she files a ticket.

It sucks, nowhere in the documentation were we told for her to file the ticket. We wouldn't have wasted all this time. So, I'll see how her ticket is responded to, and report those results here.

Updated: 11/27/07.. the environment is added, for partner's PC/SL world. The version of the viewer is 1.18.4 - which is not listed in the affects version/s box.

Updated: 11/27/07.. we also tried these steps last night, to no avail, to recover the inventory loss.
Cleared and removed cookies on PC; cleared the router memory; cleared all temp files; uninstalled all 4 versions of SL viewers; completely removed the SL directory from /user location. Re-installed core release viewer 1.18.4 and logged in; inventory still same, missing ~5K items.

Original report:
My partner was online late (4:00am SL/Pacific time, 11/25/07) and editing a rug in our rental place. During the edit, she had the texture window open, and the inventory window open. After trying several textures, she was in the inventory window, and tried to delete a texture that didn't work in the rug, and wasn't much good either. At that point, she noted bizarre behavior on-screen (hard to describe).. inventory window changed.. so, she logged off and back on to fix it. Cleared cache..

On re-log, the inventory (about 5K items) was gone, and all that came on from server was the basic 800+ items. At that point, panic set in over customized shape, avi etc. and went to help info island; got good help but the inventory recovery steps on the wiki were carefully re-done, step by step, and nothing restored the inventory. We manually deleted her cache from the local PC,
and re-logged. No change.

We used the HAVOK beta, logged in, tried to get inventory there, then back to regular viewer. Nothing was changing. It appears the bug caused unknown behaviors, including major inventory loss. We are not sure about filing a support (we are not yet premium members) ticket, because we don't know what chance we have of inventory recovery.

We were looking at buying land, building/creating a house, starting a business in SL, but now, with this loss of L$40K in items, with no way to backup locally or on-line with LL, we are considering just stopping SL at this time. I will try and write this story up (our 5 months online) for my blog, so people can see what happens to your SL life when you invest your RL $ and time and heart and soul into the metaverse here.

Why we'd leave is it's too sad to see her disappointment and frustration over her lost avi; she spent over 4months customizing the avi, and the shape and skin are no longer in the inventory, but the avi is wearing the last skin/shape - no way to get those back in inventory I can see.

So, I can update with her environment info later, and more things we're trying. But, at this point, we just want to try and report this and help others. No one at LL seems to help with inventory losses, it's the most major reason I think people leave SL, IMHO.. Thanks for letting us post the bug report. If anyone wants the name of my partner, just IM or msg me.

Hi Sire,
Just because you are basic doesn't mean you won't get support. You'll need to login to the support system at
https://secure-web9.secondlife.com/community/support.php
and from there, choose "Submit a ticket" in the Basic section. We all feel your pain. You might also try going to the Resident Answers forum at
/327/1.html
Also, maybe a silly question, but has your partner logged into SL from a different computer and checked her inventory there?

Oryx,

A godsend to hear something.. first one to reply. I did *not* know about basic support. And, will do that today.. well, once the RR is over.

We are looking at buying her a premium membership/or me, IF we stay in SL after this. So, at least we'd have some support. You know what they say about "free tech support" :).. it's worth what you pay for it most times.

I'll go look in the forums, and post a version of this info there for Residents to see our case.

Yes, we did try logging in from my computer (we're live-in partners RL) and as her, there was no difference in the inventory tried there or that way. Sigh..

Best regards,
SireS

Sire, welcome to the forums, very sorry about the circumstances, though. I see you are renting on mainland. It is unlikely, but possible that through some sort of laggy set of keyclicks your inventory got embedded in the land or house somewhere. The easiest way to find out would be for you to contact the estate owner and have them tell you how many prims you have on their property.

If it is a huge number, that is the problem. You could then either find your stuff within the property and pick them up yourself, or have the estate owner return them all. But the latter would be a pain, as they would doubtless be returned as coalesced objects.

Other than that, it sounds like you have done all the right steps. SL has been plagued with inventory loss issues for the last number of months, they have a crash project in process to fix the causes, so jump on that support ticket and bug LL about it. They have been known to be able to do something if the loss happened recently enough.

It also occasionally happens that the inventory returns mysteriously on its own. But usually within the first few days.

Hiya, Sire.

A few weeks ago, LL did an Inventory Loss Survey. The survey is now closed (you can find it by searching for Inventory on the Blog if you wish to read it. Quite a few entries down).

However, the Survey was conducted by Sidewinder Linden. You might try e-mailing him/her (not sure which) directly, or by sending him/her a detailed notecard with the info you posted above.

Also, in your Support Ticket, you might also want to list his name as a possible contact department for the Lindens who work Support to contact.

Good Luck

Re: Tips on recovery..

 Nika,
I think that's indeed what happened to her; she was clicking around maybe way too late for good actions, so something flubbed maybe.. not sure, but it's a good guess.
1) We checked with the estate owner/landlord, no sim changes that would indicate the inventory is embedded on the property/sim. But, I'm not certain how he'd check (except PRIM count?). We went to our own count and it has not changed, thus, we don't think it's in the sim/home that way.
2) I thought about hiring somebody to "look" for me, since I have tried my tricks, but will try them again tonight, thanks. I will take the rug up to my skybox (Mystitool), and look around and under it. I see something YELLOW in it, but not sure why it's yellow or what it is. It's an animated/scripted object, too, so I'm a bit weary of destroying it by the examination, too. I can replace it if I did that, though. If it's not an inventory server problem from LL, then the inventory might be embedded in a prim right there. I just don't know how to find it very well.. I know show transparent and beacons, but beyond that, not much.. :(

Thanx, and GoodTimes happen to GoodPPl,

Great tips..
11-29-2007 08:59
Great ideas, Jessica.. yes, I'd read about the major issue (inventory loss), it scared me about some further actions in SL, but since the initiative started in April, and it's now almost December, I'm not sure what has been accomplished. I will read up on the progress, and then contact Sidewinder Linden.. and share that notecard with the info too.. I'll update the Support Ticket later with the possible contact info for Sidewinder Linden..

2nd Update: 11/29/07.. just a note to mention I went ahead today and upgraded to a PREMIUM membership plan. Maybe that will help support bump up the ticket for some help.

Update: The support (basic) ticket is now marked WORK IN PROGRESS, so at least they are looking at LL, and did not close it or mark it resolved.. woohoo! a ray of sunshine.. :

I'm gonna assume you've checked your Trash and Lost & Found folders. My only thoughts are that your partner deleted the whole inventory by mistake in which case see above or, as has been guessed at already, transferred it all into a local prim/object. In which case she would have noticed the PC hang a little is my guess as it transferred 5K objects over into a prim/object. In which case you are going to have query every object in the locality that your inventory could have been transferred into. Somehow I doubt that this happened as copyable objects would still remain in your inventory. Do you still have copyable objects in your inventory?

If there are no copyable objects left in your inventory then it would appear you caught a huge inventory loss error/bug/glitch and only LL may have a remedy. I wish you the best of luck as inventory loss has been a bugbear of the population and the main priority we have asked LL to sort out for what seems like forever now. Sorry I don't have a magic bullet for you.

Hire??? Just post the SLURL for your place and the name of your partner.. Somebody with some spare time will likely stop by and take a look.

I think it was around that date when I lost more than have of my inventory. All textures, all shapes, skins, artwork, etc. Lost more than $100. But it was my artwork that I lost that I had made and put in the system that hurt the most. If my circumstances hadn't changed right before that I'd have left SL at that point.

Try typing the letters a through z in the search inventory option. Sometimes that helps find a few items. Wish you luck!

Inventory Loss - Sad Tale Ends..
12-10-2007 16:36
Updated.. 12/11/07.. Here's the answer we got from Frontier Linden:

Solution Solved:
(12/6/2007 7:09 PM PDT) Greetings,

If you items can't be located on the Beta Grid then there is unfortunately nothing that can be recovered. I understand how stressful this can be and I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Regards,

Frontier

We got from the basic inventory recovery information from a VOLUNTEER on an info island the same night she lost her inventory. I'm disappointed the staff don't even read the words you write in your ticket. I suspect if LL doesn't fix this inventory problem, this could kill the future potential for SL.

Sorry for the bother in the forums.. some folks suggested trying to post the information here, to help others out.

Over and Out, Closed Issue,
Sire Sands
