I accidentally moved an object below land surface. Is there any way to retrieve the object without digging into the terrain (i.e., lowering the terrain)?

Uncheck Client / Rendering / Types / Surface Patch (from memory, Surface Patch is the option, but it could be under another sub-menu of Rendering) which will hide the land.

Another way is Client / Disable Camera Constraints which will let you cam underground.

(To get the Client menu use Ctrl-Alt-D on a PC or Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D on a Mac)

you can also try going into Edit mode, and clicking and holding down your mouse button and moving around the area you lost your item. it might highlight it and you can pull it out of the ground.

Use ctrl+alt+shift+5 this disappears the ground, use them again to bring it back. Ive had to do this a few times and it works.
