Is it possible to send an Im to somebody in SL without actually being logged on?

Yeha, I wish there was a more consistent and convenient bridge.

About a year ago, the Lindens asked for feedback on a plan to create an external IM client, and hinted that the API might be released, but it was shouted down by the usual suspects as being a horrible idea and the end of SL as we know it. The Lindens apparently took that as indicative of popular opinion and dropped it. People ask about it every couple of weeks, though, so it's not like there isn't continued demand for such a feature.

Personally, I think they should do it, though I think there should definitely be some extra status modes added, both in-world -- "Invisible" and "I'm only in IM" mode would be a start. ("Invisible" users simply wouldn't show up as being online, though they would still exist and be sensed in-world. Other users just couldn't see if they were online or not, nor could they track them on the map.)

While not a wonderful solution, you could create a script that would accept IMs from email and forward them to the appropriate players.
