I have been using SL on a lab computer -- an eMac -- for a couple weeks now, but it's majorly slow and graphically challenged. So I've been trying to run it off our new class-built PC, and it's not working. When I try to log in, it gets as far as "Verifying protocol version" and then gives me the following error:

Unable to connect to Second Life.
The system may be down.
Please try again in a few minutes, or click Help
for advices and a link to the system status web page.

Well, I know that within minutes of getting this error, I can log in just fine from the Mac, so it's not a problem with "the system" being down. The machine is a 64-bit system running Windows XP 64 Bit Edition, and the graphics card is a RADEON X600 series. That's all I know.

Oh, and by the way, I've been trying to log in every day and it keeps doing the exact same thing, so I know the problem is on my end, I just don't know where or how to fix it.

Firewall issue

Can you please turn off the firewall on the PC (third-party and/or Microsoft version) and see if you are then able to connect to Second Life?

I don't think this computer *has* a firewall. Nothing in the Program Files folder is one, and Sandra (a program that shows what Internet utilities the computer has on it, among other things) said a firewall isn't one of them. I checked Windows Help, and the instructions for enabling/disabling Windows Firewall said to click on a tab that isn't there, so I'm assuming Windows Firewall isn't installed either. And I'm almost positive the campus's all-network firewall isn't the culprit because SL connected fine on the Macs. So it must be something else.

Exact same error for me. I even got SL to work on my laptop, though the laptop's graphics card is not as good as the desktop. (I used omegadrivers to get the laptop's driver issue in order.. it was a radeon igp). Alas, I can't run it right on the laptop.

I've reinstalled SL, deleting all entries in the registry.

I've reinstalled my graphic's card drivers.

I've reconfigured my windows firewall, and checked and rechecked my router's firewall settings.

Anyone got any answers?

SecondLife Preview 1.8.0(0) Does it as well!

I tried the new "viewer" and it's doing the same thing!

Turning off windows firewall altogether did nothing for either version.

Something's amiss here.

I'll keep trying different things.

I'm having the same problem from my Mac. I can log in from a Windows machine. I have excluded the router firewall, since both machines are behind this firewall. This problem exists in 1.7 & 1.8. Any suggestions?

After some help from Toy LaFollette, I found that resetting the modem works on the Mac. According to Toy, it also works on Windows.

Im wondering if this is something with it being run on the 64bit version of windows, are you able to set secondlife.exe to run in 32bit mode or is there anykind of compatibility setting, as they dont yet build a 64bit version of the client
