Sounds like your cache might be corrupted. Have you uninstalled and reinstalled SL?

When you say your monitor goes crazy, can you describe what you're seeing? It's possible your video card's overheating. Right-click on your desktop and select Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce 6800 Ultra > Temperature Settings.

What is your GPU core temperature? Ambient Temperature?

Is this happening in any software other than SL?

core was at 53

checked that before i posted here

Got some lines and bars goinfg across then a restart. It felt like a video card crash but have never had problems with it before. I'll take my canned air to it tonight and blow it out.

Only happening in SL

I've been running Rome:total war and NBA Live 2005 with the graphics settings maxed and have had no problems

I reinstalled SL and still didn't worked

Only way i got it to work was to turn off AGP

You crash because you have an Intel graphics card. You can't use it with SL.

Phil, out of curiousity, what make and model of power supply do you have? What is its rated +12v output? What is its total (marketed) wattage?

I can't say I'd suggest a 400w power supply with the 6800 at all. It takes an excellent Antec 450 to run my 5950 at home. Everything else caused directly what you describe... and incidentally, since SL shouldn't corrupt the screen, make the monitor go nuts, or lock up the computer, I'd suspect you may have power issues.
