Where are the white chat dots???

Hello all thanks for looking..
I cant see any white chat dots above anyone's head..
I have gone round and round trying to find the system requierments page to see what Sl needs.

I run the chat wizard a million times I never hear anyone or see the white dots the box that pops up on the side thats supposed to have active chatters is always blank.

I have dell Dimention desktop 4600 sieries. Its not that old.
Can someone help me?

Seems that Sl wants the old standard for sound blaster only is this true? I have sound max system on my dell Still shouldnt I see the white dots over peoples heads still??

You're asking about voice, yes? I don't think there is any particular sound devices required - it works fine on my horrible laptops with integrated audio. If you have it configured correctly, you should see a white dot in slightly above and to the front of your OWN head - that's a first indicator When you have your mic actually on, you will also see green lines whose length is proportional to the gain you've set on the mic.

You also get an additional set of voice controls down above the bottom toolbar, right near where you streaming audio controls are.

If you don't see those, then voice is not actually enabled, and you won't see any white dots.

Yes that was my suspicsion that something is going wrong with the voice wizard. Its not really acting as if it installing anything.
the controls where it says talk are usually kind of greyed out unless I choose toggle to talk mode. I still dont see any white dots.
I have unstalled Sl and reinstalled it Didnt make any diffrence.
My microphone works fine with programs like Skype I just dont understand why it woulnt here.

Ohh when I went to the knowledge base it really didnt get my anywhere is there a direct download for it? I even tried clearing my cashe

The wizard is a bit of a joke, it just offers another way to set the settings on the preferences page, and I had some trouble with it as well. It didn't set things that I thought it had. Try just setting everything on the page directly, and hit Apply (not just OK) when done.

Other than that, I really don't know what to try. It worked for me the first time.

yeah everyone says that it just shouldnt be giving me these problems.. I even went to help island they coudnt help me there.
They all say it pretty much should be automatically on.
I was kinda planning on leaving sl anyways rl is going to get too busy soon

hope you haven't left sl.. i have had a problem with streaming music since i've been here... i can only hear music at locales maybe 10 percent of the time ( i still tip the dj's though )

and now that i've decided to try voice the result i was afraid of has occured. never ever a white dot... i have the voice controls at bottom of screen, but never ever a white dot anywhere... and oft times when i try to reconfigure via the so-called wizard - when i Next to the Level Indicator - it displays a Please Wait and even if i had the patience of Job, i couldn't nor wouldn't wait that long.

i'm thinking it all may be related in my case to my laptop running wireless network to the desktop PC two rooms away. so i shall be trying voice via the old cranky desktop to see if i get a different result.

don't know if this is your circumstance or not. but i do hope you haven't left in frustration... there are still so many wonderful things here even for the "deaf".

Hey there, this sounds like a problem that a bunch of us were having when voice first came in. One of us formed a group '401 Unauthorized', as that was the message coming up when we ran the log. There is also a Jira issue on this, so take a look at that. Our problem was that we couldn't complete the voice setup wizard, it would stop at the bit where you test your sound input and would say 'Please Wait' indefinitely. The 'Talk' button was greyed out, and there was no white dots. I think it had to do with a faulty server on Vivox's end. Put in a support ticket, and even trying running the log, and see if you get the '401 unauthorized'. Join the group as well if you want! Good luck with it, it can be terribly frustrating, but ironically, once I could use voice, I didn't use it!

In the voice device section make sure you use the drop down menus to select your actual sound board, do not use the 'default device'. Run the hardware wizard in Audio icon in Control Panel of Windows, to make sure it actually works.

Make sure your microphone is selected in the correct socket and not muted, otherwise you will not be connected to the voice servers, subsequently not see anyone with voice activated.

Make sure your connection is both good enough for VIOP and that you have sufficient bandwidth free to give you a constant and sustainable connection to the voice servers. Turning down the client bandwidth in Network Tab of Preferences, to share the bandwidth. The reason being SL does NOT provide the stream, it is from a third party and is ported into the client after it has been 'downloaded/uploaded' from the 3rd party servers. Same principle as media (music/movies), you have to 'share' the bandwidth between the various servers providing content.
