Clouds of smoke...

Having tweeked my preferences to try and lower my lag, then reset them back to the original setting (as it didn't work). It now seems every time I touch something or an object rez's, it's accompanied by puffs of red or sometimes blue smoke. This is a bit of a problem when using for instance my helicopter as the rotor and cabin are constantly shrouded in this red smoke. Any ideas..to turn it off that is.
