I'd turn the modem and router off for a few minutes.

Try doing Advance, Character, Character Test, and pick the male or female avatar. Then preferences, network, clear cache. Then restart SL.

If that doesn't work, then system specs for all the computers you've had this problem on might be useful.

What video drivers are you using?

Having a problem on one account and not another doesn't eliminate the computer as a possible source of trouble, particularly in the case of an avatar appearance problem. It just means that the computer might have messed up the baking of one account's skin but hasn't messed up the baking of the other account's skin. Yet.

Did you try the "do Advanced, Character, Character Test, and pick the male or female, clear cache, restart SL" suggestion?

Systems specs might be useful. Not having system specs is definitely not useful.

Regarding the clothing errors:

nVidia card? 177.x drivers?

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7957 (driver problem, there's also a suggested SL fix by Chalice)

Items you've worn that are corrupted may take some nudging to clean back up again (clear cache, rebake; or failing that edit them, change the length, save, rebake, change the length back to what it was, save and rebake once more).

As far as your avie turning completely black:

Are you using more than one monitor? If not then the problem might be due to the above, if you are then SL doesn't support dual monitors terribly well.

Clear cache, log off, restart SL, drag it on over to the other monitor, log in, rebake and you should be fine then.
