You can use ping for instance, as ping <hostname at sl datacenter>. Refer to this page http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechVerifyingProtocol

If you're on Windows, go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt

Then type either:
ping sim500.agni.lindenlab.com

(To see if you're getting through)

or:
tracert sim500.agni.lindenlab.com

(A more deals "step by step" network packet send/receive test)
