Walking and flying sticks "on"

Several times last night and today I've found that sometimes when I start walking or flying that mode sticks. For example, walk mode sent me across the ocean, through walls, through trees, etc. nonstop. I finally had to force-quit. This has now happened enough times it appears to be a glitch of some type.

sounds like you were crossing a region (sim) boundry. It's a common effect and is more pronounced when there is serious lag in the area.

You can minimize the effect by going slower. I've found that the faster I go across a sim border, the rougher the transit is.

Also, cross perpendicular. Diagonal crossings seem to take longer.

Finally, avoid the 4 corner intersections of sims. Crossing at this point can end up putting you in the grey void. SL seems to get confused sometimes as to which server to hand your data off to (the sim crossing), and it normally occurs right here.

I understand what you are saying, but I actually get in "stuck" mode. No keys work at that point -- not even Escape -- so I end up having to Quit.

And you've tried just simply waiting?

When there is an extremely heavy load on SL, and tp's start to get affected (and crossing a sim border is actually a very short tp) sometimes it will appear like you are stuck in flying (or walking). Nothing seems to work, except the camera focus direction keys (it won't change the direction you are going... just the direction you are looking).

After a few minutes, SL will give you a pop up that says it could not teleport you in a timely manner. BUT... you keep going. When this happens to me, i'm usually stuck for about 5+ minutes. Eventually, SL returns control to me, putting me back at the sim boundry at the starting point. I've found that when this happens, either the sim i am in OR the sim i was trying to enter (or both), is about to crash.

If it's not this.... are you on a wireless connection? (just trying to rule out the obvious causes) Are you experiencing massive packet loss (not the 3-5% we are all seeing, but massive on the order of 25-33%)?

Wow, I've never waited over 5 minutes. Next time I'll go get something to drink and give it some time. :-/

Mermaid, it sounds like you're getting disconnected. Often when you lose your connection to the servers you get no error message. You can move your camera around, but your avatar will not respond to any movement commands. If you were in an animation (walking, typing, dancing, etc), your avatar will and others around you will keep moving, but you completely lose control. Additionally, you can type text into the chat box or IM window, but it won't appear to 'go anywhere.' I and several of my friends have had this happen and didn't even realize we were disconnected until 5 minutes or more had passed without anyone saying anything.

I think Second Life behaves this way on purpose because it can often recover from minor network problems, and tries not to scare you with warnings or dialog boxes in the hope that your connection will go back to normal in a few seconds. But sometimes it never does.

I'm getting this problem repeatedly while flying with a flight enhancer. Happens every time I fly for more then about two seconds. This used to work reliably.

This has happened to me three times tonight. I was investigating the Toyota Scion showroom. First time was when I was driving, the car sunk through the road and would not stop moving or let me out.

I quit, logged back in and was placed on the road. I spent a bit of time flying and it happened again - I fly through a building and out to see. I could change direction, but not stop. I quit again.

Third time was walking back into the showroom - just before I got in, started walking again.

I'm fairly new to SL but this is really putting me off. How often does it happen? Why can't it be fixed? If it's a 'lost connection' issue, there should be an 'attempt to reconnect me' button - or the connections should be made more stable. Anything we can do??
