I just downloaded the new RC viewer. Pretty skies, huh? So I took a snapshot to disk (as I have been doing for years in SL) expecting the usual .bmp file type, however, when I tried to open the file in GIMP, I realise that it's a J2C file and I'm unable to preview or open it.
Was this new file type announced on the blog? I check the net to see what programs can be used to open it and I found:
IvanView Corel Paint Shop Pro Adobe Photoshop with JPEG 2000 Plug-in
All of which costs money! Come on!!!
Has anyone been able to get around this? Am I doing something wrong?

Go to the Client menu, and UN-check "compress snapshots to disk".

Correction: Irfanview is free. www.irfanview.com But I just checked this and I'm still seeing it save as a BMP. After checking, I think that what's wrong is that you have "Compress snapshots to disk" checked under the Advanced menu. P2

Thanks guys, I figured it out. This is the first time since I joined SL that a new viewer 'reset' that option.

Quicktime will also view JPEG2000s - I'm surprised that the Gimp doesn't. It is actually a very good format technically, but because so few things are actually prepared to work with it, it's not terribly useful.

I think Jpeg2000 code contains some proprietary license stuff, so GIMP is philosophically opposed.

Well, it will read and write PSD files which are proprietory, and there is JPEG2000 support in Debian distributions I see.
From what I can see on the web as to why it's not in the GIMP, it seems to be a combination of (a) "it's difficult" (b) "nobody's really that interested". There seem to be plugins but they're not part of the base package.

The cheapo editor, Jasc PSP, has had J2k compatibly for over a year now. It's good to see that others are just catching up. I've kept 'Compressed To Disk' off because I wasn't sure of the format or how lossy the compression would be. Now I'll check it out. (^_^)

It's a pity you can't choose which compression format to use, like PNG, JPG or J2C.

I just save as .bmp and compress them later when I feel like it. J2C is a pretty okay format though, I just might turn that option on soon and see how much it eats the picture. (^_^)

In my years of experience with Photoshop and Apple's Preview program, as well as with Irfanview on a Windows PC, the JPEG 2000 file format is meant to use a .JP2 file extension, not .J2C. That's the file extension I've used & tested successfully in the past with each of those programs. J2C surprised me, and I thought I'd used every one of those little suckers at least once! Preview will not open a .J2C file for me. Does it work for you? I don't find J2C snapshots helpful or useful at all.... I was surprised to see the client making such files. Thank you, Phoenix, for pointing out that I ought to be able to stop SL from using .J2C files by unchecking "Compress..." on the Advanced Menu. You saved my bacon! I'm back to BMP files! At least I can compress those to JPEG 2000 myself.... or PNG, even.

From: Analisa Mounier Was this new file type announced on the blog?
I joined SL almost the same day you posted this, but I've checked the blog posts around that date, and find nothing about it. I check the blog about once a day, and don't recall seeing it mentioned. It really threw us for a loop over here as we were shooting scenes for an educational 'machinima'. Luckily, we learned a workaround from Pheonix, in this thread.
