I have a Toshiba Portege R100 and I have never been able to get Sl to run on it. After SL detects the hardware it gives me a message that the vidoe driver is out of date. I downloaded a utility called Driver Detective and after running it Waqs given a report that the Trident driver I have is the latest, most up to date.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Model name/No. Portege R100 / PPR10U-04Mxx Display controller Trident XP4m32 LP SL PC Minimum System Requirements: # Video/Graphics Card**: * nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better * OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better From: someone The choice of graphics chipset is somewhat perplexing though as Toshiba has chosen a Trident XP4m32 LP chipset with 32MB of memory. This is a 3D capable chipset, but it doesn’t come close to the likes of ATi and nVidia.

Does this mean I must replace the video chipset? Is that even possible?

nah Brioni the problem is the nvidia cards do not all have up to date drivers on their site... you have to look around the net for more info on your gaphic card that's what i did since no one could help me out with my toshiba laptop and brand new nvidia card... it works now but it is DAMN slow ... so i gave up logging in from a laptop and just use my desktop when i'm at home for SL

Thanks. I guess I didn't even know I have a Nvidia card. I was thinking it was a "trident" card or just trident chips on the motherboard. Do Toshiba laptops typically come with a Nvida card?

Ignore the NVIDIA discussion, it bears no relevance to the Toshiba laptop you mentioned. http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/eng/spec.php3?model=PPR10U-04MTrident is the name of a graphics company from MANY years ago, mid-90s, now out of business. A Trident graphics chip is well below the minimum requirements to run the SL client. Consumer laptop graphics are not upgradeable. Unfortunately you won't be able to play Second Life on that machine.

Thanks. I feared as much. I think I'll get a Mac Book. Hopefully that will solve this, and many other problems.

I know you can run SL on pre Vista Toshiba machines... Two of my friends play it, and they both have the same toshiba machines. Although since I got mine, I've been having the same problems, and it's the Vista installed. One of the first total Vista machine Toshiba put out, so down grading to XP was out of the question.. GRRR.. though I'm now try the new drivers that were released and see how that works. Just what I need, a portable SL addiction machine.. thinking it may not be the best thing to do.. lol.
