While logged on, it's virtually impossible for me to move my avatar. When she does move, it's often delayed by minutes. However, I can still chat with no delay (as far as I know, I'll recieve a message, send the response, and then the response will show immediately, where as with latency issues, I'll recieve the message, type my response and send it, and then the response will show up later). Also, it seems as if it is constantly downloading things in the game, as the size of the game folder is constantly increasing.
My System: AMD Athloth 2500 (running at 2.2Ghz) 512Mb Geil pc 3200 DDR RAM Sapphire ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 128Mb Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Western Digital 80Gb, 7200 rpm, 2mb cache disk Dial up internet connection that connects between 33.3kbps to 48kbps

Yea thats gonna happen, minimum requirments for sl are a broadband connection, while dialup does work its verrry laggy, not much you can do except turn your bandwidth all the way down in preferences network and also turn your drawdistance all the way down in preferences > graphics.

Dialup is not supported. It's just not what we consider an acceptable experience. It lacks the download speed and response time to support a fully streamed 3D world.

When I tried to join (different avatar whose name I forget) with dialup a couple of years ago, I had to quit right away because the welcome area was going to take over 30 minutes to load. (I seem to remember some sort of onscreen meter with "Loading N of 300 textures..." but maybe I'm just remembering things wrong.)
Anyway, don't do it with dialup. DSL is now, in many cases*, as cheap as dialup.
*Especially mine.

Here is a blast from the past. The term "shebanging" was originally coined when a beta resident, Shebang Sunshine had to temporarily do without broadband. She logged on using a dialup connection, and could be seen hanging out in the vicinity of Oak Grove (I think). There used to be an old Native American village down there, and it was probably one of the least traveled areas of SL. SL was a bit leaner in those days (no streaming media). Logging in via dialup was possible back then, but its probably much less possible today.

Dialup just will not suffice for SL. I first tried SL a fair while back, when I only had a 150kbit "budget" cable connection, and it sucked. I got so fed up with blundering into buildings before they were rezzed or textured, that I gave up. I can't even imagine how agonizingly poor your SL experience must be on under a third of that speed. I returned when I had real proper 2mbit broadband, took advantage of another free trial (as it was way more than 3 months since my first trial period) and haven't looked back. If you have any friends or family nearby who have broadband and a half-decent PC, go try SL on their connection (just download the client, or take it with you, then log in as yourself as normal). Steer clear of the Welcome Area (as that's lagtastic at the best of times) and you'll see why we harp on about SL requiring an adequate connection. (and yes, SL is constantly downloading the world around you - textures on surfaces and other people's clothing, in addition to the geometry data and info about other peoples avatar movements)

Getting a broadband connection isn't an option, unfortunately. Looks like I'm stuck *frowns*

I second Lee's statement that dialup is not acceptable. If I hadn't gotten addicted to SL via DSL first, there is no way I would have played over dial-up the way I did for as long as I did. It was just too painful, in an almost physical sense. I still think it would be cool if LL created an IM-only client for us to use when we're temporarily without broadband, but there are, I'm sure, much more important (and cool) things to be created first.#!
