I'm mainly posting this here for future reference.

When I run at 16bit color it runs fine. But when I had to go to 32bit color to try windowed mode the whole system crashes within 60 seconds of starting up SL.

Basic hardware:
(Removed since the solution had nothing to do with the hardware hence future searches shouldn't find this)

16bit color is enough for me so i'm not begging for a fix, but I figured this info might help someone else down the road if they have the same issue.

The system report is very lengthy, fair warning.

Thanks

Things i would try

turn off : Fast-Write in bios
increase your virtual swap file : min 2048 max 2048, dont let windows change it up/down

~.~ see if that do anything

Actually it's not just in windowed mode.

Since I made this change it's been crashing the PC every 15 minutes or so.

Haven't changed anything else.

You likely need to update your NForce2 motherboard drivers. Probably wouldn't hurt to flash the bios as well. After that, download the latest Catalist driver for your card and also get the drivecleaner utility for cleaning out old driver remnents then uninstall your video drivers and run the cleaner. Reboot then install the latest Cat drivers. You then need to turn off SmartGart and VPU recovery. You need to go into the bios and turn off fast writes. This should slow the crashing down a lot but SL and ATI cards tend not to get along.

Actually I updated everything and went to more "cautious" settings and it kept crashing.

Then I checked my CPU temp. 70c.

My thermal grease was not doing it's job and the system was overheating.

Replaced the grease and all is happy again.
