since installing the program I haven't been able to change my clothes/appearance options very well most of the time...
Sort of things which happen:
hair colour - changes the colour of my face.
Can't change the size of shirt sleeve lengths/trouser length.
Shirt cover hands.
trousers cover feed.
shoes go all the way up to the crotch. (If I am not wearing trousers)
does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to fix this?

This sounds like it may actually be a video card problem. What card are you using?
A few things you might want to try, also:
1. Clear cache.
2. Clear cache and actually go in and remove the cache directory.
3. ... and then your "ShadedSpriter_Shi" directory next to the cache cirectory.
4. Remove and reinstall SL.

You can also try ctrl alt d > debug > character > rebake textures

my graphics card is an onboard one on my laptop
SiS M661FX is what the device manager says...
other people appear all right with me...it is just me who appears funny...
I tryed all the things...none of them worked...
