Avator turns black!

This issue started sometime in mid December. My Avator began to turn either all black or partially black whenever I made changes such as a different skin, changed clothes, changed shoes etc. It seems to be completely random, sometimes I can do a complete outfit change with no problem, and other times a simple pair of gloves or shoes will change me to black. In addition, sometimes I fully change black, sometimes I only partially change to black. Once black, I stay that way (i have played for hours hoping that it is a slow rez problem). Even stranger, sometimes if I am inside and get dressed, I turn black, however if I step outside, take off the clothes, and put the same ones back on - it works. Other times, the same action does no good.

Here is what I have done to try and resolved the problem:

1) Cleared the cache - re-logged
2) Asked Live Help
3) Tried SL on 4 different computers. (Same problem on all)
4) Had a friend try SL on my computer using their account (No problem)
5) Removed all attachments, clothing etc - and tried to start from scratch with an outfit that I know works.
6) Went through the Edit Preferences with a Linden in Live Help - made numerous changes to text - nothing worked.

One other thing - I do regularly play SL on up to 3 different computers .. not sure if that may have an effect.

Any help appreciated ... please!!!

I have to say, since getting my new laptop at christmas, even tho it rawks hard, if I zoom out, ppls faces go black and I don't know how to fix it either.

Its not big deal, just REALLY annoying

These types of problems are known and can be maddening to fix. Wish there was a button to do away with them. Glenn... some suggestions:

1. When you're changing your outfit, do you drag-and-drop a folder onto yourself? For example, in your inventory, look for the default outfits in LIBRARY ---> CLOTHING. Take just about any one of those, copy it to MY INVENTORY ---> CLOTHING, and then drag-and-drop.
   
2. What's unusual about what you're mentioning is that it sounds like it happens independently on each computer. When I've seen these problems before, they tend to happen on a single computer with a defective (or similar problem, like overheating) graphics card. It'd be very unusual indeed if all 4 manifested the same problem after doing a folder drop.
   
3. If you have any other accounts, do these same problems happen on them? (This is to rule out whether it's account-specific, for whatever odd reason--not likely but I'm leaving the possibility in to be safe.)

If you have avatar vertex program enabled in prefs > adv. graphics, disabling this should fix that problem.

I don't have a second account, but a friend of mine does have an account, and she has used my computer without issue.

I ahould also mention ... everybody else also sees me as black. I therefore would assume that this is not a computer specific issue.

One last thing that may help ... I can change outdoors soemtimes (not all the time), but hardly ever .

Oh - today I cleaned out all of the clothes in my inventory ... thus my inventory (clothes) is empty.

What skin do you have? If you have Second Skin, you will have to reload it. If not, see if you have another copy of the skin you are wearing and put that one on, make sure you delete the bad copy, so as not to put it back on. (I've heard this works) Good luck!

Are you running dual monitors by chance? seen the turning black bug with that. And also with Avatar vertex...so if dual disable 2nd monitor to tests, and avatar vertex uncheck that in Adv graphics section in SL...

I've seen this happen lots of times, and when it happens it hits everyone looking at the avatar. It seems unlikely it's a video card problem.

Turning off my extra monitor and restarting, then choosing the Appearance menu did the trick!

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 in a laptop, with a large plasma for my secondary display.

Hope this helps others. And hope the Lindens see this and fix the bug.

Has anybody a fix for the problem with a dual monitor set up that your avator turns black?

I have an ATI videocard.

this is down the line, got a new computer jsut recently and it is set up with diel monitar but my clothing and avitar skin turns all black. But the wierd thing is every one sees it blakc to. can we get a fix for this

To fix the monitor issue I had to swap the 2 monitor plugs on the graphics card then swap them in the software from primary to secondary. I even swapped them back by accident once and recreated the problem
