I believe you are underestimating the amount of work it takes to remove a self-replicating viral device from SL's grid. It's not a matter of just bringing the grid back up.

For each and every sim, LL has to...

1) Shut the sim down.
2) Go through its database and remove all references to this viral object.
3) Probably do some kind of database integrity check.
4) Restart the sim.

All of these steps can be automated, but I can't even guess how many hundreds of sims there must be out there now. (200?) And, I'm just guessing here, there could be even more steps involved. (ie: Step 2a, run FUBAR to rebuild database index keys or something.)

Then, once all of those steps are done for each sim, LL has to verify the whole grid is operational and its support services are working properly. And if they miss just one of these scripts (say, our friend had an alt that also was launching these devices), they have to do the whole mess over again...

This is going to take a while. I'm not trying to be snarky here, just trying to demonstrate how this might leave SL down for a number of hours.

You forgot:

Tip #5: The Interweb has many amusing things on it
Tip #6: Including many places that are NOT related to yelling at the Lindens on these forums.

They're not just bringing the grid back online. They have to clean up the mess left by the grid-wide prim/script attack. There are only 600+ Lindens and a whole lot of sims and prims to clean.

What I would like to know is if this is all such a big deal, why some people are allowed to remain on SL. Seems to me the logical choice would be to shut it down to everyone but LL...
