Hello, forgive me if this has been asked and answered a million times but I'm new and a bit lost... I haven't been able to access Second Life yet because I have a Radeon 7500 (???) - - I went to the ATI site as suggested but am not sure what to download. Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated (and please speak to me as if I'm a complete moron because I'm not technically inclined at all...)
Thanks so much!

Although the 7500 may work it will be rather slow, sl, minimum recommended ati card is a 8500 with 32mb ram https://secondlife.com/whatis/sysreqs.phpYour looking for the catalyst drivers for you os

Thank you so much for your reply - - I have a notebook computer and I guess I can't download right from ATI then...(If I'm reading all the FAQs correctly). So I went to the Sony VAIO website and downloaded the driver updates they have for my computer model (PCG-NV170), restarted my computer & SL still crashes when I try to open it.
BTW - I have tried downloading from ATI also & the installation was unsuccessful... I'm at a loss.

They can be somewhat outdated and since ati dont provide drivers direct, you could try these http://www.omegadrivers.net/ these are tweaked ati drivers and work on the laptop series too they wont be supported and textures may not work properly, but if all else fails you can always reinstall the latest from sony.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your time.
I went to the Omega site - Why can't techies write for stupid people?!!!! It says:
"If you have the normal ATI drivers installed, uninstall the ATI Control Panel or CCC BEFORE upgrading to these drivers, the Omega Drivers already have the CP integrated and another CP will cause conflicts or other problems."
Um, yeah, okay - but how do I do that? And...
"In Windows 2k/XP, ALWAYS disable DDC in the ATI "Displays/Monitor" CP after installing drivers to be able to use ALL the refresh rates and resolutions your monitor supports, also this is the best way to avoid the 60Hz RR bug"
WHAT?!!!
This is way too difficult and I think I'll go back to playing the Sims...

hay To uninstall Ati drivers completly, you need to go into control panel : add remove programs : There should be a : Ati control panel : program there somewhere, Basicly remove anything that has to do with Ati display name, then you need a restart before installing the Omega drivers, when in windows install those. Then you can install Omega drivers after you done that, ALWAYS disable DDC in the ATI "Displays/Monitor" controll panel after installing drivers to be able to use ALL the refresh rates , so its in the display ati tab. I hate 60hz, its a awefull thing eh see if that help you any CP = Control Panel CCC = The new Control Panel for Ati, think thats catalyst 5.5+ drivers DDC = Digital Content Creation (i think, not to sure on that one)

Well, I've followed all the suggestions to the best of my ability and SL still crashes everytime. So I'm giving up for now - - Maybe I'll try again in a year or two when I get a new computer.
Thanks for your help all! x

Yeah, I hate to say but somewhere around 1.5 the 7500 completely stopped working for most folks using it. Those who were able to use it were severily hampered and mostly unusable anyway. The latest updates killed off a lot of marginal machines. When SL says minimum, they mean minimum as performance on the minimum requirements is pretty weak as it is.

I'm sorry but ati.com DOES provide driver updates for every family of their products. I use it regularly. Please don't give out misinformation, or at least check out your info before you pronounce the site non driver providing. http://www.ati.comright at the top is a tab for drivers and downloads. after which you select what graphics card or other product you want the driver/update for. this is silly when the help folks cant read a simple web site. shame on you!

I please ask you to retract that statement, ati do NOT provide drivers for every line of their products and i am not misleading anyone, ati do not support their mobile chipset products except x800 and x900, and refer customers to the laptop manufacturer, in many cases these are chinese noname companies with no online support. Of course if i am still wrong please feel free to critise the notebook download page for xp is here find any drivers for chips other than the new x800 and x900? https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Xoie, is your Radeon 7500 in a laptop or a desktop? If it's a desktop, you should be able to find a cheap replacement for around $40 US new. That'd let you use SL now without having to replace your entire computer.
