Low FPS on decent computer?

'lo

I used to have problem with my old computer, i had crappy FPS and SL kept crashing on me. I knew my computer sucked then so i gave up on SL and waited it out.

I recently aquired a brand spanking new computer and wanted to give SL another try.. and it work (at least it doesn't crash on my yet). I still have a problem. I only get 4 FPS as soon as there is 3 or more objects on the screen. It's ridiculous. The only way i can have goo fps (25+) is when i'm looking at nothing at all, just terrain.

I've installed the lastest drivers and flashed my bios. I didn't have anything running that were process-intensive. Here's my computer specs:

Mobo: Asus A8V-E (K8T890)
cpu: Athlon64 3200+
ram: 2 gb (2x 1gb Kingston DDR)
vid card: Asus EN6800GT (pci-e)
hd: Western Digital Raptor (36gb, 10k RPM)
PSU: Enermax 720W
connection: 750kbs max download, low latency / 100ms ish pings
dual monitors.

Can someone please clue me in? I'm really trying to play second life but i seem to be cursed.

:o depends on what youre looking at, any loads of toruses near you =^^=`?
Im usually at 15-25 fps , and about 40-60fps when i build in sky, heavy crowds you bet it will drop to 5-10 easy like that, av's kill you if there are many in few.

Hoochie hairs will kill client if you look at it, you could try a few things.

Object details - low-high
Local light - a no no , it usually make your client crawl
draw distance 128-196m is ok
Avatar vertex program is on?

Drop hair attachments if you are using a older prim torment cluster, some needed a defrag to fix a really annoying lag in SL, ctrl-shift-2 (need debug meny up for this ctrl-shift-d (if updateCull is taking up pretty much everything you should defrag))

Last thing is if you are using any temperature monitoring program and its active it can make SL craaaawl , it need to be minimized, i noticed once insane fps lag cause of i had mine active and polling to much , doh hehe

drop fps if fps 30? optimist :p , youll rarly have anything over 15 with AV's around,, try drop fps : 0

check your harddrive defragment , yes its a new comp ;p but after windows install youll have about 30-50% defrag usually.

Did you take a look on your frame console ingame?, look what is killing you there usually.

With that comp i would run this :
draw distance : 128-196
fog distance : 4 (i dont like fog)
drop draw distance : 0
Bumpiness draw distance : 100
Max Particle count : 8192
Outfit Composite Limit : 5

Anistropic Filtering : on
Local Light : off
Shadows : off
Disable Far clip : off
Shiny Object : on
Avatar Rendering : bump map & cloth
Terrain : full

How do i access the frame console? And i'm defragmenting as we speak; thanks for the tip. :)

ah ingame, ctlr-shift-d brings up menu , then ctrl-shift-2

I thought of something else to try to, thats a Via driver motherboard if im not way off, try installing new drivers for that to, i have asus mb to and the onboard nic that followed i had troubles with, it keep lagging me and freeze up a second or two every 30-60 min, pretty rare but annoyance , so i havnt used it for awhile.

Might been fixed in later drives, but if you got another nic you could try that to, its like its polling speed every 30-60 min.

You using wireless or the marvell gigabit nic onboard?.

And might i add about time Asus fixed their driver/utility webpage, it actually work for me to download , before it was "ftp" full alllways ^^

ctrl+shift+d doesn't work for me, it doesn't do anything? 'deed to group'? should i do something prior to trying that, it's disabled in the menu

:) mostly looking for anything that could been the cause but you see its pretty similiar to what i have , and i have decent fps, sometimes when you look at some things fps drops like a rock, cant see anything special about this either.

Updategeom = prims affect this alot, especially toruses

notice a spike in UpdateCull, hm hm tried the via drivers new ones?

I just installed the hyperion drivers, the windowed FPS didn't move at all. :( This is frustrating, i hate running game full screen because switching back and forth with other applications take forever. There has to be a logical reason for why it's giving me 5 FPS in windowed and 60 FPS full screen (at 1600x1200). :\

Newton, can you click your frame console display so that it shows everything scaled as a percentage and then post a screenshot of that?

Er, out of curiousity, are you running this across two monitors, or only on one?

Ask and you shall receive:

Edit: Woops didn't see the lastest reply, I do not span it on both monitor, only the main one. (and disabling the secondary monitor doesn't help)

Newton, is that what happens when you click the frame console? It doesn't keep all those bars within the HUD?

Anyone have any ideas whatsoever on why i only get 4 FPS in windowed mode and 60 in full screen mode? Any at all? I'm willing to try any ideas. however farfelous they may sounds.

Does your frame console look the same in windowed and full-screen mode? If not, which is depicted in the above screenshot? What dose the other one look like?

SL does not like duel monitor set up at all with my 6800 Ultra in the standard "extend desktop". It does the same thing to me trying to use two monitors with SL in windowed mode. I found a couple of ways around it, first is set your display to one monitor, start SL and load it up then go to properties on the desktop and extend it to the other monitor.

Another way is to use the Nvidia profiles and use the "horizontal spanning" option. This works great and I can have 2 instances of SL running at the same time with reasonable framerates.

Dangit, now fullscreen is doing only 5 FPS, same as windowed again. :(

Anyway here's the frame consoles for both.

Full screen:

Windowed:

Thanks, that did it.. quite a PITA though. I now have to disable the secondary monitor before i run SL, log in then i can restart the secondary monitor.
