For a few days now, I've not been able to login to SL on my computer, as it won't go past the "Verifying protocol version" part dealie.. tonight, i install SL onto another computer.. and i'm able to login. I'd like to be able to login again from my computer, as it's a newer/faster/better computer. Didn't make any changes in between be able to login, and not. Both computers are networked, through a router.. I've even opened up the ports specified that were given to fix the problem.. no dice. Can anybody help me?

Firstly check that that computer based firwall software isnt blocking the software with each new install the signature of the application changes so programs like mcaffee may need to be set to re-allow, as far as routers go, if possible check to see if the router allows upnp, this will open up the ports automatically.

That would be a good thing to check.. if i had a computer based firewall. Neither computer has one.. I didnt make any changes to any network settings, or other computer settings or anything that'd make a difference, from when i had last logged in, til when I first couldn't login, or til now.

If your running windows xp, windows firewall will be installed, you can see its settings in the control panel by either going to security centre or windows firewall.

If it is set as an exception set for secondlife try deleting it and letting it be re-detected when you restart secondlife

i do use XP, but i don't use the windows firewall. just the one that came in with my router. and i've even done the port forwarding thing, that they tell you to do, and it hasnt helped.. and even those ports are still supossed to be forwarded to my computer, and SL still logs in on the other computer, no problem. on my computer, it went from working, to not.. it started at the time they had the power outtage at their colo. haven't been able to login since it happened.. at least on my computer.

No probs, as a guess it's probably somethig to do with upnp as the other computer's didnt need the port forwarding setup, I havent had to set it up on mine either, just installed sl and go. If the router supports upnp you shouldnt need to configure ports to forward so there may have been a conflict with 1.6 but that would be a guess.
