Curly hair causing lag?

Has anyone else noticed that lag increases dramatically when your camera view includes avatars with very curly hair? I've tested this on a few avatars, getting them to change hairstyles, and the lag goes away when the curls do.

Sorry if this is a known issue already.

Yes, it's a known problem. Hair made with lots of twisted toruses will lag the wearer and anyone who looks at them. It's called the "Hoochie effect". ;)

Yep,i get the same results.

I think the cause is the pure amount of torus prims that make up the hairstyle. From what i have read in these forums before, the torus is what makes the SL engine work hardest at deciphering.

I have curly hair that has 153 prims, friends complain that I lag them. The drawback of looking pretty I guess

153? shoot ~ 153 plain white cubes would prolly even effect the sim. :) That is like 750 square meters worth of Prim allocation.

I know that the Twisted Torus does cause the client to work harder at rendering - but I would wager that most of the problem with laggy prim hair is just the huge number of prims that some people use.

I always hope that people wearing extravagent costumes have a sort of alternate AV for events and crowded spaces. But - I sort of have a twisted-prim fetish so I don't mind the 'Hoochie Effect' too much. hehe

But, but, but how can this be? We were told that the hootchie hair problem was fixed many updates ago.
