Ok, this is simply weird and I am curious if anyone else is seeing this. My machine is a 4400+ AMD Dual Core 2gig with a 6800 Ultra 512 and it runs SL rather well. I have been seeing framerates in the low 20s since I run up my AA and AF settings on my video card really high. I was playing with my settings yesterday to make an SL profile with a little better framerate with a little lower quality. Anyway, I got my normal fps to around 40 after playing with the settings. I started and stopped SL many times yesterday to make sure things were ok. No problems.

Today I loaded a program that required a restart, business as usual in that. Later on I started SL and found my framerate was a dismal 15 fps. nothing I tried affected it, affinity, rendering options etc. Nadda. Then I went to my video card's 3D control panel and adjusted a setting. Started SL and holy moly I was kickin' up to 60 and 70 fps with good image quality! I shut down SL then rebooted and restarted SL and found my fps back at 15. Again I changed a random setting in the video card control panel and wham, back to 60 and 70 fps.

I have bug reported this since I can reproduce the glitch consistently. Thing is, I don't know if others are seeing this too or not. Give it a try and see. Some folks using high end cards have been reporting sad performance lately and I wonder if this might be a solution. Let us know!

Well, if you have a AMD 64 x2 processer like i do, or anybody else out there has a Intel D / core 2 duo visit this site if you use Windows xp sp2 There is a little registry fix to increase the throttle of the CPU increasing performance of both games and multiasking, i did it and oh my god i got like 110% increase on my performance the results on the graphs speak for there selfs on this one, allso you should try downloading the AMD CPU drivers, + the AMD optimizer.

Wow, Melash, thanks for posting this fix; my framerate more than doubled, almost tripled!!

AMD 64+ Dual 6400

I didn't install the optimizer though; people have said that it doesn't appear to do much.

Thanks again!

I use a AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 5300+, with 2gb 533 and a 7950GT GC, For the most part I can't see my fps because it goes off the scale at over 100fps. In fact, I had to turn every bit of eye candy up to get it to around 50 or less just so I dont have too many dropped frames in the Machinima I make.

I was looking at a club with maybe 6 avatars in it. Has anyone tried just changing a setting and if they have, what kind of difference did it make? Doing what I suggested then 15 other forms of voodoo doesn't answer my question. I need to know since I am talking to Milo Linden about it in email. Please let me know if changing a setting in the video control panel makes a big difference in framerate so he can have more data to work with. Thanks

I followed everything in the post, until it got to the part of editing the 'boot.ini' I don't have one, I triple searched my HD and I am 110% certain there is no file of that name.

boot.ini is hidden and a system file.

You need to go into file explorer -> tools -> folder options -> View
and check the folowing.
1. Display the contents of system folders.
2. Show hidden files and folders

Uncheck
1. Hide extentions of known file types
2. Hide protected operating system files.

I feel like an idiot for asking, though I know I shouldn't.

I have an Athalon 64 3800+ 2.41gig processor
2 gigs of ram
Nvidia 7300GS

Ever since the update, my frame rate has dropped from the 25-30 fps to an abysmal 10-12 fps, and in some cases even down to 2-3 fps.

Do I need to update my processor as well? I just did an update on my video card and it really didn't seem to make much of a difference as far as the frame rate goes. It does seem go up slightly (slightly being just 1-2 ) if I run it full screen rather than in a window.

I don't know what else to do at this point. Up until the 14.1 update I never had this problem.

Well, first off, have you tried going into your card's control panel and making a change to a 3D setting?

Also, unless you upgraded from an Nvidia 5xxx or ATI 9xxx series card you haven't improved much by going with a 7300 gs card, it is a low end card. With Nvidia, the second number is very important, anything below a x6xx can be considered a low end card. A 6600 is actually a better card than a 7300 and a 7800 is a really good one a 7900 even better and a 6800 is almost as good but a 6200 is dog meat. A 5700 will run SL ok but will have a lot of goodies turned off and a 5200 won't run well at all.

I'm new to the 3d video card thing, so I had to look at the panel and tweak a few things. I found that making the 3d more performance than quality seemed to help the fps rate go from the low 10-12 to hover up around 20-22, much better than what I was getting before. Things are smoother.

I also turned off a lot of things (low ground quality, no water ripping, turning off the shiny factor) really helped too.

I would love to upgrade to a better card, but at this time I'm tight on money (like a lot of people I imagine are), as well as planning for an upcoming wedding.

If I do find the extra money, what would be the recommendation for a good video card to work with SL?

Syedit is a 16bit MS programme burried in the system32 folder used to open boot.ini amongst other things, it doesnt now, and despite already having all those items in folder options un/checked I still can not find it.. spooky eh?

1. click windows Start button

2. Right click My Computer and select Properties from the menu.

3. Go to the Advanced tab

4. Under Startup and Recovery option, select Settings.

5. Under System Startup you will see "To edit the startup options file manually, click Edit". Click the Edit button and this opens Boot.ini in notepad. add the line you are instructed to add from that website. Please be careful and read what that website says to do very carefully.

This is for Windows XP btw.

An Nvidia 6600 GT is the sweetspot on SL video cards, they work really well and are cheap, I've seen them on Tiger Direct for around $50 or so but mainly range in the $100 range. Ebay is also a good source of inexpensive video cards. Basically a 6600 or better, 7600 or better and any 8800 version but make sure you don't get anything with LS, SE, or some such as it is going to be a reject bin card with lots of features missing or crippled.

Sorry for going off topic in your thread Kathmandu, but I have not been able to replicate what you said was happening. I am using a Geforce Go 7600 graphics card.
