http://www.google.com/analytics/

This is not spyware. It's a free website tracker from Google. It doesn't seem to slow things down for me, though.

So it is not on my system. Well thats good. However for a while tonight it took my computer a long while to open the Second Life web page and it always hung on Analytics.

Google Analytics is a (beta) tool that allows websites to track demographic information about users that visit the site.

It's not spyware... technically. Analytics basically tracks where your ISP is located, what site you were linked from, search terms if using Google, and other data for "marketing decisions." No, the data does not show your IP address or who you, a single person, are.

But for the paranoid, don't follow links to Second Life from a porn site, unless you'd like the Lindens to see that on the weekly graph. :p

Yes, I'm serious.

Think I'm kidding? Here's a sample graph from my own site, using a link I placed on www.nanowrimo.org .

Astute users will notice this is a link to my writing wiki; note the direct link from my sig bypasses analytics entirely. If it didn't, there would be a dot from Florida (where my ISP is located).

I don't think you're kidding, Jeff. I would have used a ;) if that was the case. Although I think it was seriously funny! :)

BTW, that looks like the Royksopp video for "Remind Me".

You are all indeed correct. We are testing out Google's analytics service, which is a free (with the usual associated "beta" label) web traffic analytic service.

If you're worried about privacy, I can only reassure you by saying that we won't know anything other websites that you visit already know. =) This is fairly standard web traffic analysis, and has nothing to do with you individually.

Other than that, we are committed to keeping what information you CHOOSE to share with us, completely private.
