Twice since the last update (1.8.3(10)) I have had SL "Not Responding" in Windows. I can provide specs and such, but this has never happened and I wanted to see if others were noticing this. My apologies if this is a repeat post. I have submitted crash reports for both occassions.

This has always happened to me in certain areas. SL will lockup from between 3 to 20 seconds. I'm on a Mac though, and it does eventually start responding. Does yours ever become responsive again?

This is due to the virtual memory leak which now runs loose from the removal of the texture cache option whcih limited memory usage of SL. When it leaks into virtual memory (uses your hard drive as memory), it will begin to slow down if it needs part from virtual memory as it's much slower to read and requires access tot he hard disk, so it's best not to run stuff in the background and try to bring texture sizes down by reducing your video card memory option, this will compress textures more (Look more blurry) thus reducing the amoutn of memory used for textures overall.

Actually, the removal of the "Texture Cache" option did not remove the limits on texture memory usage; it simply made the calculation automatic based on the Graphics Card Memory setting.

It is possible that the new calculation is causing more memory to be used on your system, which could trigger a swapping condition as described by Pyrii. You can try reducing the Graphics Card Memory setting to see if this helps. If it does help, please post back here with the amount of system memory, actual graphics card memory, and the recommended setting shwon in the Second Life preferences, so that we can possibly adjust our calculations.

It is also possible that a change we made to improve network utilization causes your system to become overloaded with network traffic. You can try reducing the "Maximum Bandwidth" setting to see if that makes a difference. Again, if it does, please post back with what the setting was, and what you changed it to. Here it would be helpful to know your processor speed and system memory.

A third possibility is that we introduced a memory leak in the system which would cause the kind of swapping slowdown described by Pyrii. You can open up your "Windows Task Manager" at any point after noticing a slowdown (on Windows XP hit ctrl-alt-delete and coose "Task Manager";), and look for SecondLife.exe under the "Processes" tab. If the "VM Size" is greater than 128 MB + your "Graphics Card Memory" setting (e.g. if the setting is 128 MB, the max VM size should be about 256 MB, at 256 MB it should be 384 MB, etc), please post back with what the memory size was and how long you had been running Second Life durring that session.

Thanks in advance for any constructive feedback.

My VM Size is 330.62 MB (338556K) with a 128MB ATI X300 graphics card. I have been in world a little less than 10 minutes. My VM Size is increasing the longer I am in world.

Alright, I went ahead and tried to lower my vid memory to 64MB and things were fine. Then I TP'd home, changed my body parts/clothing/attachments, etc, and boom, locked again. Here is some information:

AMD Sempron2400 (1.66GHz)
1.25GB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX5200 128MB
DSL that is rather fast

SL Setup:
Cache: 1000MB (sometimes I turn this down)
BW: 800
Graphics, only Shiny
Adv Graphics - 64MB, Object/Trees at 60% or so, Avs at 90%
Draw Dist - anywhere from 64m to 512m

I forgot to get a snapshot of the SL process when it crashed (and I could not reproduce it easily). But here is what it is running at now:
- 64MB of Graphics mem configured (128MB actual on the card)
- VM size of SecondLife.exe is at around 206MB when it should be roughly 196MB if I am reading you correctly. But that's still close...

I usually have GAIM and FF running at the same time, but again, this never happened before the last update of 1.8.3(10) - if that has any relevance. It is sure quite annoying though. I don't like having to restart, and as far as I can tell, my system is half-way decent for this stuff. I submitted another Crash Report if you have access to those (although probably not as helpful).

Thanks much,
MM

Ok, happened again. Mem size and VM size are both at 310MB. CPU is at 95 and CPU time is 15+ minutes. Total time logged on was maybe 10-15 minutes max. I left it running for a bit, but it would not kill itself, so I killed it manually, and submitted another crash report.

Freeze happened yet again

Ok, bumping again as it happened again. 99% CPU utilization, 310MB on mem and virtual mem. Had to kill it just to launch this web browser. ;-) Will submit crash report on next launch.

I would appreciate some feedback on this.

Hey, was just looking at this, and this has happened to me 2 times in 3 days. same look feel and vm usage. PC had to be cold booted. Um, could not get out 2 of 3 times. The one time I did I saw the memory way way high over 300

Just did it again. I have a new Vid card (256MB FX5200 now, with dual head). Still running SL on my 20" wide flat panel, so that hasn't changed. But it just locked up hard again. I am shutting it down and will send in another crash report.

Could a Linden maybe address this again? Getting a little frustrating and have not heard back since the first replies.

Thanks much,
MM

EDIT: If anyone makes fun of my card, I will watermelon-gun them. I wanted dual-head and 256MB, and I got this one cheap from Tiger Direct. :)
