Hi all! Sorry this is not a 2L tech issue except for the fact that I cant log on now! Last night as I was in-world I placed my laptop on a chair and believe it overheated. I heard the fan wirling away loudly but before I could get up and move it, it shut down with a loud clink. Well this has happen in the past and I have been able to restart it after some time.

Yet this morning still no joy. I push start and nada, nothining , dead. Cold 2L sweat appearing on my face.

Any thoughts. Hate to have to send back for 2+ weeks to get fixed.

Its a HP Pavilion
Intel Core 2 Duel Processor T5500 (1.66 g)
2048 DRAM
nVidia GeForce 7600 (256 mg dedicated)
Nika Talaj
now you see her ...

If you feel like gambling, you could try replacing the RAM, which is in my limited experience is the first thing to go when overheated. SL makes laptops run hot, it's not uncommon at all for them to overheat.

While you're at the computer store you might also pick up a cooling station, or pad, for your lappie --- they love them. It's a shallow stand that your laptop sits on with 2 fans in it. Runs off of wall current or can be powered off your USB port.

Thanks - I actually have a cooling station just was not using it at the time cause doing things around the place. I had just set it down for say 5-10 min and boom. After it shut down it was super hot. I thought these were suppose to shut down before actual damage took place but it seems something got really messed up.

You can skip the send back, call a repair company and have them order a new fan for you. Of course you will have to pay for it out of your own pocket. It will take them a few hours to install it. The HP is rather hard to get into and the fan is buried deep inside of it. That is what I had to do. No way was I going to give up my laptop for two whole weeks.
If you send the thing back, they will first get rid of everything you have installed on your system and you will have to start all over again.

If they can't figure out where to order the fan from, give me a holler and I will dig for my receipt. Wonder if it is an HP problem since the same thing happened to me only not quite so fast.

Good luck honey,

Great, thanks Kira. I got it started now. I bought a new cooling station and have stacked on the old one for major fan action. Is this doing anythings (sounds like it is!!!)? I was thinking if this does not work I will go with you suggestion.

I have a HP Pavilion and it was running hot, too -- the fan would just scream when I was running SL. Then I blew it out really well with canned air, and it's been fine since. I blame my cat!
