hi all,

so i wake up this morning and start up sl ad low and behold i get this message "Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsupported, please make sure you have the latest videocard drivers installed. If you continue to recive this message please contact customer service". well this just popped up out of nowhere i have been running sl just fine on my new pc for like 6 months now and i frequently check back 2 nvidia.com and update my drivers, i like to keep the pc running as smooth as possible. i have 2 of the exact same pc's one is mine and one is my wife's. same exact setup and only for some reason this week sl is running horrible on my pc alone. it first started out last week when out of nowhere i was afflicted with the horrible gray syndrom, avi's gray, vendors gray, missing textures texture popping up and after the patch that was almost completely gone but not fully and now i wake up to this. i have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, same with video drives along with rolling back to previous versions,of which i made sure were fairly far apart to see if that was the case and that was a no go. reinstalled direct x, made sure my pc was completely up to date and nothing.

my pc spec:
Emachines T5224
Intel Dual Core Pentium D 2.80 Ghz
1 gig of Ram
Geforce 7900 GTX 256 Mb
Windows Vista Home Premium

as we all know for some reason the support function on the web is not working so any help would be greatly apprecited. thanks in advance :)

Yeah.. i love when SL does this out of the blue,
got it several times myself, stuff that caused it for me

- installing new vid card drivers without uninstalling other first
ONLY with SL does i ever get this error if i install without uinstalling
games wont do this cause they are mostly directx not opengl, and not so picky about the drivers , i dont get why SL is so picky, what is it detecting that cause this?

- installing any vid card drivers that controll fan/speed ect, uninstalled them and i didnt get the "drivers out of date blabla".

- running something before i started SL, caused the "out of date" to show up as vid card was using some program/game entirely.

Most of the time it was something in background that was using vid card that caused it.

and thats about it , aggrivating as hell oh yes bigtime, got it on winxp , winvista.

Cards i gotten this on
nvidia 6800, 7900, 8800/320, 8800/640,

The really dumb thing is that insted of issuing a warning and saying that the game may not run properly. they do not allow unsupported cards insted. even if said card would easily be ably to run it.

Oh crap I am fixing to upgrade mine from a Geforce 7300 LE to a 8600 GT and praying I do not have these issues. I would hate to go back to a generic card because I want only the best in my new machine...pooh

It isn't your video card it is Vista creating problems from reading up on sl and vista problems.

No it's not just Vista, it's happening to me now on XP. And yes, because at one point I installed a downgrade without uninstalling first. But since then I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and registry cleaned, still no joy.

Did anyone on this thread succeed in fixing it? If so, how?

I just upgraded to a 8600GT. I had no problems at all. But do make sure you uninstall your old driver first. Follow the instructions to the "t". Then go to nVidia's site and get the latest driver version.

You'll love the difference in the card too :)

I love this statement.

Vista is not the problem. SL's incompatibility issues with the OS is the underlying problem. If they can't code to properly run OpenGL with Vista, that is NOT Microsoft's problem - it's Linden Lab. Since when can a game author demand the OS to support them? That's an amusing thought....

As an aside, for those running the Nvidia cards, particularly on laptops, I've found the beta drivers on Nvidia's site work well - SL seems to be able to play ok with them.

I still don't understand why should I get the latest drivers off the nvidia site? Don't they give you the latest ones with the card when you buy it? And what changes will I see if I do install the new drivers?

Found the problem in my case by reading SL's log files ... I was 10 seconds away from downloading the source, true desperation. Earlier in the day had been trying to strip down the video configuration, looking for a solution to crashing while running. Had accidently set OpenGL's "Depth Buffer Bit Depth" to something other than "default". Big mistake, evidently.

No, unfortunately videocard manufacturers don't do that. You might get a remotely new videocard driver, but almost never the latest. And having the latest driver is pretty important when it comes to any program dealing with 3D. The Lindens even go so far to say "If something happens to your account, like losing items, and you didn't use the latest videocard drivers, its unlikely we will help you. And yes, we know which drivers an account uses. The info gets transmitted when you log in." (I've taken that part roughly from an "official LL Blog" post, where someone pasted his conversation with a Linden)

For ATI cards the latest driver version is 7.9. For Nvidia its 163.71 (soon to be Microsoft certified). At least thats true today, 22.09.2007 ^^;

well, nvidia comes out with beta drivers constantly, sometimes only for certain cards. and the numbering system is wacked, at least i cant figure it out. I like to torture myself by installing beta drivers even when my system is working fine  but sometimes the driver files become permanently messed up. so i have had to use driver cleaner pro to completly remove the video driver and left over files in order to get the new one to work correctly.
