Following the 12-06-05 downtime I am seeing white grids in the ground textures , a phenomena pleasantly unseen before - anyone else seeing this?

I've seen that when new terrain textures take some time to load, but they usually don't stick around all that long for me.

These appear to come back as you fly around and get back in the same position. Never saw them to my memory until 12-06-05.

Here's what the newcomers on Help Island are seeing: These lines keep coming back.

Sometimes all the textures in a regions land parcel dont load properly, this detail you can see by opening the world menu, clicking region/estate and viewing the texture tab

This whole new default texture thing is a complete pile of poo and should be revoked asap! For me it does nothing, except detract from the immersion. I really cannot think of one single thing that is better as a result. It is utterly useless.
Why was it done ?

I've checked out La Isla Helpina and fixed the texture. It looks like it was set incorrectly. The new default "Tron" texture was added for a few reasons: it helps with alpha sorting (since before unloaded objects started out as alpha objects, which could cause alpha sorting issues) and to increase awareness of objects that have not loaded their textures yes, helping you to avoid them when navigating Second Life.

Actually, I gotta say I quite like it. When stuff is rezzing in, it sort of looks like a building under construction that gradually completes itself. It's cool! And I also find it handy to know WHAT hasn't rezzed in. Far better than smacking repeatedly for 10 minutes into an invisible wall til you can find the invisible door hole

The white grid in the ground may be the loading texture but I wasn't seeing it before the 12-06-05 downtime, while the ever present gray objects with white outlines have been around a good while, on my system.
When the loading time was shorter and the loading texture was clear and things loaded stayed loaded, people had a choice of waiting a bit in order to avoid running into invisible walls.
Those who want to avoid seeing the gray loading textures, who want to participate in a visually immersive virtual environment, without continuous, extreme reminders of the artificiality lurking underneath also have a choice: don't use Second Life.
Doesn't seem like a real good choice for a virtual reality company to offer.
It is interesting to see how some people who have complained often and bitterly about the problems they have experienced in trying to run Second Life make light of the dissatisfaction Second Life's shoddy performance causes others.
