My gf was having this problem last night. If you're using XP, try going to control panel -> network connections then select your connection, right click, then choose repair. This worked for her however now I'm having what might be a related problem but I'll start a new thread for that one. ;)

There are two problems being described in this thread that I can see; I'll try to explain possible solutions to them:

1) Can't resolve userserver.agni.lindenlab.com. This is the first machine of ours that you talk to when you log in. If we can't look up that name in DNS, we print that error. This almost always means that either your DNS settings are wrong somehow. The "fix this connection" in Windows XP does appear to resolve this some/most of the time.

2) Can't verify protocol version. This means that you've successfully looked up the userserver name, but can't actually talk to it. This can happen if Second Life is unexpectedly down (due to crash/hardware failure/horrible power failure in the colo), but usually it's due to firewall problems on your end. If you can get to secondlife.com (or secondlife.com/status/), then it's probably your firewall. If you can't get to secondlife.com, then something aweful is happening, and I'll be in the colo fixing it. :)
