I have really bad lag problems in Second life. Everything often slows to a crawl and i have to wait upwards of a minute for every texture to load that's right next to me. What could be the cause of this? I have dsl, an athlon xp 3000, a gig of ram, a ati 9800 pro...pretty nice computer overall. Is it chugging so slowly because i can't enable agp acceleration?

Using Alt-F1, what's your framerate?
Don't expect the same kind of performance you'd get in Quake. SL's a totally different type of engine, and has way higher polygon and texture numbers.
If textures aren't loading, are you sure you have your video card memory cranked up in Edit > Preferences > Options?
While you're in there, you might consider turning your draw distance down as well. Turning of local lighting (in the Display tab) can help as well.

I also have been having *horrid* lag since the ISP switchover - upwards of 10 seconds to get object information when I bring up the edit window, objects resetting while editing because it took that long for the complete information about the object to get loaded, 4 seconds per line when reading notecard lines from a script, etc.

Is that the only reason I could beat you, Maxx? I wonder if it's something about your AMD-64 CPU that's doing it. Talk to the Lindens. They might be interested to know of issues that might be coming up as more of us get 64-bit systems.

Pay particular attention to the number of objects being rendered in the Alt-1 statistic window's "Advanced" subwindow. 192m is fine in some regions and absolute murder on my AMD Athlon XP 3200+ / Radeon 9800 Pro combo in others. Those are usually the sims with lots of flashy spinny texture-bombing mal-builds, for example, Janus or Federal.

The lag seems to effecting everyone, regardless of videocard this...superspeed that..etc.. the problems have gotten far worse since the changeover and the sudden increase in online population. All of which makes me think that it is a problem with SL and not everyones pc?

Today and yesterday were pretty bad for me. Took ages for things to load, and a change of clothes were impossible.
Yet the weekend was fine!!
