I don't like it either.
We are not alone.

Heh, I've actually used bug tracking software in the line of work, but being required to use it for someone elses software is still intimidating

Am I weird then? It doesn't intimidate me at all...? I'm not easily intimidated by a web page that more or less does what it says. But they COULD change the colours....

JIRA is a great tool--if you happen to be a Linden programmer.
And its a wonderful support tool--if your goal is to limit all bug reports to those smart enough (or determined enough) to figure out how JIRA works.

It's an idiot filter. Don't get many "Joo brokks my internets!!111!!!" there.

I'm not sure what exactly people find intimidating-it does lead you through the process step by step, it's just that it actually takes a few steps.

but thanks for the insult in passing... I didn't intend it as an insult, but it is basically true. You are not an idiot since you have been there, ya just didn't like the setup, there is a difference. Make it simple and easy you will get a flood of "I have a Pentium 166 with 32meg of memory and a 1 meg video card and I can't get on SL," to the point where you have no time to work on real problems. This is why the forums are essentially abandoned by LL.

JIRA is extremely badly designed and configured - that's all.
Mind you - it really shouldn't be necessary at this point. The fact that it is speaks volumes about the lack of responsible managment at LL.

I always thought JIRA was for beta testers of programs released in beta. Usually the more tech savy folks are beta testers so a JIRA would seem fitting. However, Linden Labs denies Second Life is in beta............why the JIRA then?

I dunno... I've never really had a difficult time getting JIRA to do what I want it to do. I used it at a previous job, and it's hands-down the best issue tracking application I've ever used. I think the problem is that it's powerful, and that it's really hard to design a simple interface for something that has so many features. LL could have chosen to go with a simpler issue tracker, but then they would not have had the benefit of all the issue organization features that JIRA has.
I think JIRA does do a few things right. Want to link to another issue? Just mention its tag (ie VWR-1234) and it inserts a hyperlink for you.
Something as big as SL has complex and interlocking issues that need JIRA's "issue links" and "sub-tasks" and "duplicates" to really help organize the huge number of issues that abound in SL. I know it's a pain to use it, but I'd much rather they were able to quickly and easily see what issues are present rather than lose issues because their issue tracker isn't powerful enough!
What do you find difficult to use about JIRA? I'm not a JIRA developer, so I can't really fix it, and JIRA is a commercial product, so we're probably unlikely to get our changes implemented. However, there may be features you don't know about that will help you do what you want to do.
One thing that annoys me is that all email from the public JIRA doesn't work, period, because they somehow failed to get our email addresses hooked up into the database. Normally, any time someone comments on an issue you've made or commented on, that comment is sent to you (unless you disable that option). This makes for much more efficient communication about issues, especially when LL needs more information.

Oh, one thing that occured to me after I wrote that is that JIRA is geared toward software developers. That's not to say that "you're not smart enough to use JIRA", at all. What I mean is that the interface is designed for people of a certain training and mindset, so that they can get to use it easily. It's maybe not so good as a general tool for people of all backgrounds to use.

I'm not a software developer, but interested very much in technical stuff and I do have some knowledge of programming etc. Maybe that's why I never found it intimidating at all.

could be friendlier

I’ve used it and survived, but I like breaking things so I was disappointed. I think that’s the problem. It’s meant as a tool for LL to track issues but we the lowly residents are directed to it as a bug reporting feature. What’s needed is a simple front end application that is easy to follow, with a friendly UI. Oh…I said friendly UI. Never mind

I just don't report anything anymore unless it affects me directly, less bugs reported means less problems in world
