PCI-E Support?

I recently got a PCI Express pro card for my computer, where I understand that the card isn’t geared exclusively for gaming it wouldn’t hurt to have support for it. SL has been spontaneously crashing to desktop since the last update and I’m wondering if it has something to do with my graphics card.

Every time I start SL I get that warning that says I don’t Have an AGP card regardless of weather the option box to ignore it is clicked and both the crashes and the constant reminder that my hardware isn’t supported is getting on my nerves.

I can play other games Like Battle Field 2 and Counter Strike Source with settings as High as I want them to go and I don’t even lose a frame but for some reason in SL it crashes like I’m trying to running it on a 486 (really old computer for yee who know not of whence I speak.).

I’m assuming that since I don’t have a supported card installed its rendering everything out in software rendering mode which is putting a lot of weight on my processor and even though its an AMD, that can become very unstable; considering the amount of primitive objects rendering in SL.

I can reduce the likely hood of a crash by lowering my settings (and I have) but it still crashes. Its really frustrating to have a kick ass card that you can’t make full use of.

Actually last I checked there is no Software Mode in SL. But anyways, it might help to be more specific on the kind of card you are using.

Sounds like a driver problem. PCI-e hasn't been reported as being a source of problems specifically with SL and I have a computer with it and it has worked very well and others have said the same. PCI-e is an interface and it is supposed to be superior to AGP in almost every way and so far I haven't reason to disagree.

What has been happening is companies have been making some rather lackluster video cards for PCI-e and selling them to people who think if it's PCI-e it has to be a lot better than AGP. Ones that come to mind are the ATI 9250 and the Nvidia 6200 and the notebook equivelent X200 ATI. SL is very demanding of the computer and you need a decent system to get decent framerates and although the ATI 9250 may work, 5-10 fps is about the best you can expect, a lot less in a crowded sim.

SL lists supported cards for a reason, they are pretty much the only cards that work with SL. Some Intel Express cards may work but they have a lot of features turned off because SL won't play nice with them.

well to be more spasific i have an Nvidia Quadro FX 3450 PCI-e (its between 3400 and 4400 i think)

I'm not really having the crashing problem anymore. It seems that in the fallowing updates the problem was somewhat fixed. however I still have to dumb down my settings to get a decent frame rate...

I've tried SL with three (3) PCI-Express computers all using an NVidia 7800 GT or NVidia 7900GT cards and SL doesn't respond and my avatar goes flying into the ground and just keeps on going down.

Works fine with the same NVidia drivers with an AGP card like a 6800 GT. I've never been able to run SL with ANY PCI-E video card.

I've tried SL with a 6800, 6800GT and a 7800GTX PCI-E with no issues that differ from an AGP, also tried it with several PCI-E computers that I build (a good stress test) sounds like you are having connection problem rather than a video card issue EX) Walking into the ground.

then you are doing something wrong. I've never even played SL on anything but a computer using PCI-E, even my laptop.

sounds like your might be using a cheapo motherboard, or bad chipset drivers.
