When I put on none shiney textured clothing, it will rezz black horizontal lines thru the clothing texture and my skin within a few seconds of putting the clothing on. There are a few items that do not do this but the majority do. Some items will develop alpha horizontal lines instead of black.

Others can see the lines too... not just me. I have noticed that while I am in the appearance editor I cannot see the lines but others can.

Some of the steps I have taken so far to fix this:

1) I have cleared my cache numerous times
2) I have reinstalled the SL client numerous times
3) I have installed a new video card (Nvidia 6600GT)

I have reporduced this bug by logging into my account with my other computer it seems that this effect is only with my account. When my friend logs on with his account he doesn't get the lines.. So I'm thinking it is something with my account only.

My system specs:
AMD Athelon XP 2200+
1 gig of RAM
300 gig HD
Nvidia 6600GT

My intenet connection:
SWBell DSLe 3mbs down, 1.5mbs up (yes I pay big money for this)

Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone?

TIA!

I don't have a solution but your problem sounds very much like a problem I have. In my case the black stripe occurs quite intermittently. I can change clothes and it goes away.

Yea I've tried removing and even editing my clothing and still the lines persist. Even if I use another computer and login in to SL. I get lines... I have noticed that if put on purchased clothing that it will not get the lines at first. But if I change avatars and then put on the clothing it will get the lines. Think this is of significance? Who knows? I've have not yet received a response from the Lindens other than the usual clear cache / reinstall default tech support answer. If that were the fix then I would not still be seeking answers today. The fact that the lines still happen to my AV on other computers besides my one at home just shows it's not hardware / operating system related either.

My personal thoughts on this are mixed but I think that there is a bug in the permission system on my account. Hard to explain why I feel this way but it's a gut instinct.

What happens here is that your computer messes up while "baking" all the pieces of your clothing (shirt, skin, etc.) into one texture for your avatar. That way, we only have to send people the one texture, rather than five or six separate ones. If there's a problem with your setup (too-old graphics drivers, overheating computer, etc.) this "baked" texture can get corrupted. Your computer then uploads the bad image to SL and everyone sees it.

(Appearance doesn't do this because Appearance mode shows the original textures for your clothing.)

My first suggestion is to update the drivers for your computer. Be sure to uninstall things first, as per these steps:

Next, you might uninstall/reinstall Second Life and remove any temporary cache files, in case one of them is at fault.

Finally, go into Appearance and change part of your avatar. For example, change the shirt sleeve length. Save the change, then exit Appearance. Hopefully this clears it up!

So you are saying you basically have to rebake the clothing textures that were messed up by a previous video card or driver? That is why the lines follow to different computers? Therefore if Naztee were to assemble an avatar on another computer free of this problem then use it on the original computer the lines should not appear if the problem were fixed? If the lines do appear again, Naztee could go back on the "good" computer and change a minor item in appearance causing the textures to rebake clean?

Ok I did what Lee Linden said to do verbatim. It seems to have worked. The one thing I did not do before was uninstall my antivirus before uninstalling/reinstalling my video and unidrivers. This, I think, was what was keeping my drivers from reinstalling correctly. I reinstalled SL and logged in and tweaked my clothing. It seems to have "baked" right this time.. everyting is just lovely except for the SL client constantly crashing to the desktop... but that's a whole other issue. (It did that every since 1.6 and up)

Thanks Lee. Your a god send and I truly thank you. Hopefully 1.7 brings greater client stability :P
