Whenever I start SL the Startup window comes up and usually gets to detecting hardware, sometimes Initializing texture cache, and then the Crash Logger comes up. Every once in a while (2x in a week of trying) the log on screen comes up and one of those times I've been able to log on and everything works normally. I didn't do anything different, and the problem started before i updated to the new version. Have D&R'd countless times with old and new versions cleared cache uninstalled and deleted all remaining files from my computer Restored computer from days before the prob occurred disabled and reconnected my network. the only times it actually worked were when i upgraded to premium (interesting coincidence) and when i threatened my computer with physical harm but these only worked once and threatening only got me in for a few seconds.
running Compaq Presario, Win XP, nvidia, wireless, and plenty of resources

Can you be more specific on "plenty of resources"? Proc, Speed, RAM Size/Amount, nVidia what?, etc...

Windows XP Home Edition Compaq Presario R3200 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ 1 Gb RAM 60 Gb HD 20 available NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go 64M
Dak Linden says my video card is not supported, but then how was I able to get on for the last year, and a few times when this problem occurred? BTW it says NVIDIA GeForce4 or better right on the system requirements page

64mb graphics is a bit tight for something like SL; it's very graphic intensive. I'd suggest upgrading to one of the recommended cards.
I have just upgraded to Vista, and have a Geforce 7600GT 256mb which works wonderfully.
As for why you "could" get on to SL and now can't ... I guess that's what they call progress. Personally I'm really looking forward to Windlight, couldn't give two hoots about voice, so there are reasons to upgrade anyway. I had a card like yours a couple of years ago and upgraded then - but the rest of my PC was much lower spec than yours too then.

GeForce4 perhaps, but not a mobile chipset. It would be rock bottom and I do think their bottom of the barrel specs are starting to fall outta line, as SL has grown and the code has gotten fatter with age, it's perhaps time that even Linden Lab raise the bar on what's expected out of a system spec wise.
