So when do I actually get to do anything?

I've finished the orientation and looked around the Help Island. I've been to the actual game twice but didn't get to do anything. I literally did nothing but spin around in circles, not moving at all until I was logged out for no reason.
I'm using Vista in case it means anything.
When do I get to do more than spin around in circles?
