Unfortunately, the "-noprobe" command line switch doesn't seem to work. I am dual booting with XP and Vista Beta 2. Since I have an ATI card, SL won't run on Vista.
Someone said they were able to install the old XP ATI drivers in Vista and SL works for them, but I have been unable to get that to work since Vista won't install those drivers.
For now, I'll keep using XP for SL, and Vista for everything else. I'm totally digging Vista! Some pretty cool features, and it runs well on my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop (with 2GB RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 128MB RAM)

Vista and ATI

I am running Vista Beta 2 and have the latest Vista Catalyst Drivers from ATI and SL wont run, complaining about video drivers aswell.
If anyone knows of a way round this it would be greatly appreciated, from what I gather the people who have successfully got it working are have a better experience in SL performance wise.
I know the drivers are okay, its just SL mis-interpreting them. There must be a way to disable this probe feature.

Considering Vista is still in beta, I doubt the Lindens will do anything to support it directly. But I do feel that at least being able to disable the hardware check would be useful in this case, and other cases as well. There is a "-noprobe" command line switch to start SL without the hardware probe, but it doesn't work. Maybe Linden Labs could simply fix that switch to please us "early adopters"

OK - for all those out there (like me) who wish they could play SL on their ATI powered PCs under Vista...
The ATI drivers for Vista Beta 2 have no OpenGL support yet.
This is listed as a known issue with their drivers in the ATI readme file.
Which means that there is no way whatsoever that it will work until ATI release a new driver.
Nothing short of a rewrite from the ground up of the rendering engine could be done to SL itself to change this, and the Lindens are powerless.
We are waiting on ATI, who are, sadly famous for their poor quality slow late support of OpenGL
