So my mom got herself a crappy laptop which she mostly uses to play her silly flash games and Jazz Jackrabbit among other crappy platformers in DOSbox. This thing doesn't even have a real CPU, it's one of those VIA things... and an S3 graphics chip with only 32 megs of shared RAM, which eats into the already skimpy 256 megs of system RAM. Well, what do ya know, SL WORKS FINE! Here's the catch: at the default settings it only gets 1.2 fps. But I managed to bring it up to a very usable 13 fps by basically disabling rendering of almost everything. This means I can still chat and script, which is all I really care about anyway Congratulations Linden Lab! This is a very important first step in bringing SL to the masses!

Don't say stuff like this, you'll make Linden Labs think they don't have to worry about performance anymore. I'd still like to get improved performance on my MODERN system, and support for dual-core or dual-CPU computing....

Sorry Keane, I don't know which performance troubles you had but any computer bought within the last 2 years should be good enough for SL. Mine's a lot older than that and I can't complain. SL is, after all, not a fast-paced action game, and has indeed been designed to run at 10 fps or so. In my experience, most of the user experience is dependent on your ping, rather than your system specs, and in any event, i think compatibility trumps performance for something like SL, where what matters are the people.

Sounds good at the first glance, Eggy...but I doubt that "the masses" join SL for chatting and scripting only. I have 2nd 3 year old pc that ran SL just fine one year ago (sometimes even with less lag than my main pc). Ever since it has gotten worse for that oldie with every update and not better!

I found the same thing... I bought a Dell Inspiron 2200 (Celeron370/768mb) from the Dell Outlet, upgraded the 256mb ram it came with from Crucial and bought an internal wifi card off ebay for it. The base unit from Dell was $447, I might have $600 into it now.. Thinking I'd give SL a try on it, I was blown away when it not only worked, but worked pretty well.. Even with a default install I got 3-4fps at the Shelter, and with some tweaking, its significantly better.. I'd not care for this to be my only access to SL, but when nothing else is available, its better than nothing... I was on travel for work for about a week and would have been in SEVERE SL withdrawal if I'd not been able to get on from the laptop. Your mileage may vary....

Sounds like you did MacGyvering for Mom, Eggy. That's schweet. There's a word I'm looking for here (no, it's not "ghetto" , which could be used to describe this type of resourcefulness. Hrmph!
