It seems about the same to me, there was an earlier point release a couple of weeks ago that made a real difference for me. It's still annoying, but it's playable.

I am still seeing gray textures , although it seems to have reduced. Still not acceptable though.

It's alright for me - bearable in most areas, though some textures still do take awhile. It seems like I had much more trouble with lag in general back when I first started (1.7.4 or maybe 1.7.3? I think there was a update the day after I joined). But then of course, I did spend more of my time in heavily populated areas.

I think I've developed a fair tolerance for this stuff, but then I also think I don't have it as bad as some others. Also, 1.8.1 doesn't seem to have affected textures for me.

I'm going to go at it in stretches and see how it does for me. I've had some spotty hours, possibly network congestion during that time, but I also had a nice stretch when it looked like my Maximum Bandwidth was being used to its full potential--being set at 1000 kbps and all. I saw textures pop up really quickly. So, I'm going to give it some more time and reevaluate as necessary.

Textures and objects are loading ok - pretty much just as in the last version. I've had no major problems in that area, tho.

I did notice one thing that changed. Some of the scripts that I have running on my land seem much more responsive. My visitor list used to just kind of trickle out the names, now they just come firing out. Other scripts are much quicker on the draw, too.

The gray loading textures have bothered me to the point where I have posted so many pictues of them on snapzilla that I have received complaints from people about spamming snapzilla.

Roads don't render as fast as you can fly, objects like buildings don't appear till you are right on them or in them.

I replaced my hub with a router. This did reduce the number of out of order packet messages I had been getting, but unfortunately it didn't help speed rendering or texture loading.

I even get gray loading textures for default plywood, that is one of the client assets - it should be readily accessible, shouldn't it?

Alpha Loading Textures For Phantom Surfaces!
03-05-2006 10:42
Early this morning, which is usually a "down time" for the Internet so traffic is pretty fast, I got stuck in some prims among in a forest of Linden Trees after teleporting. Due to the grey loading textures I couldn't even see what I was stuck on.

Rather than teleporting out, I decided to wait it out. 15 minutes later all I could see was *still* nothing but grey loading textures. I relogged and a minute after that everything was fine.

If they're not going to fix the damn problem, they need to at least go back to Alpha textures for phantom surfaces (linden trees, particles, avatar attachments, and of course phantom prims).

I've been doing pretty good. Set my cache to 200megs and purge the cache with every session. Everything loads up pretty quick on my 3.0mbit ADSL connection.

Sounds like you may have it worse than I do. I have it quite bad enough though.

Do some folks not see the gray textures at all, or if they do is it is just for a brief flash - so brief that they could just as well have been transparent?

Some folks say they don't notice the gray - is this because they have become desensitized from repeated exposure?

Are there any significant factors in common between those with extra long gray loading times?
