IM typing sometimes doesn't appear

Hello,

This is actually a problem a friend of mine is having. He says that when we are talking in IM sometimes what he types doesn't appear in the window. It will only miss a couple of lines then the next thing he types appears. The previous couple of lines never appear. This is becoming a problem as he is starting to wonder if I'm doing something like muting him when I'm not. Any suggestions?

It is rather common. What happens is, for a brief period, SL thinks you are offline. So instead of sending you the IM's they head to your offline email. (you do have an offline Email set, right?) You can usually go there and find what was said. I now regularly keep my email open and when someone takes to long to reply, I check there, and very often, There is their sentence, waiting. :)

Thanks for the reply! But I have email set up and no, I don't get them there. I don't think it has anything to do with my AV. When he types the IM and hits send it just vanishes into space.

Hey this is just like Usenet!
Me too!
I can send IM's into a void sometimes, never to be seen again, and I've also wondered why people have stopped talking to me when they obviously don't get a line of my IM. One waits politely and presumes they had some RL thing to deal with till ten minutes later you get a "Hey! Are you ignoring me?"

The alternative is of course to send a "Over" as a separate line each time you finish typing. If both the IM and the "Over" get missed then it's just bad luck. And if your other person would then just reply "Roger" on receiving an "Over" that made sense we'd be away! Oh. Unless they don't get the "Over". In which case, lacking a "Roger" you'll have to do a "I repeat: ...message...", "Over" and maybe a "Are you reading me?" just to check. It would certainly add a special kind of WWII bomber pilot romance to IM's.

oh well, thats a new one on me. i've had instances where I was in a sim that was 'cut off' and you couldn't IM in or out, but it was rather blatant. Never had it happen as you describe, mine invariably end up in my mailbox.
