This happened sometime around 2 am CST of Last night (2/9/05, yes also this morning, blah blah blah technicalities lol), when I was relogging because my computer's Virtual memory was getting overtaxed (I could usually tell because the game would start chugging on cue to my computers "stress" noises, these little humming sounds that means it's thinking) If I rebooted my computer it'd fix it. So anyways, I try to log in after rebooting, and it goes through the log in process all the way to "precaching..." 75% about through the first progress login bar, then crashes to desktop (sometimes with an automatic crash report sent, and sometimes not. About 50/50 of that), and then if I try again it gets stuck on "Contacting user server" then after about a minute it returns to log in screen. If you keep trying again it'll alternate between the two without fail. I've had weird log in problems before (however not like this one) and I was tired anyways so I went to bed and figured it might be a server-side problem, and tried again now (almost a day later) and i'm still getting the problems, so first thing I tried was updating my ATi Radeon 9000 Pro drivers and it's still happening.

So i'm not sure, anyone have any ideas to fix this? I'm not very technical oriented so please go easy on the terms lol.

Art, I don't mean to sound patronizing because you prolly already know how to do this, but if you haven't, have you tried resetting your login location? As in, close SL, and click this link to log in:

secondlife://Ahern/128/128/

Does that do anything for you? :)

lol no not patronizing. I did know about that, but I never actually bothered to consider it an option. And it worked >_> Well, better to be slightly embaressed and in SL then not being able to log in but having my pride lol.

There's a known issue right now with corrupted cache files (possibly during a crash) causing that loop where the crash logger crashes and you never reach the login screen. The trick is to purge your cache files or change your login location. Details for "blowing out the cache" here:

Well, it happened again =/

And this time changing the log out location didnt work, even temporarily. So I tried emptying the cache and temporary folder, (the cache was already empty since I had just emptied it and reinstalled only yesterday) and deleting all the temp files didnt do anything. I dont want to have to keep installing and reinstalling every day, and I dont think I can do anything else what with it being an asset server problem.

EDIT: I Just tried what I did last time to fix it, (Clear cache, clear temp, reinstall SL), and i'm still getting the same problems I got before (Crash to desktop or stuck at "Contacting User Server....";). So unless anyone has any new ideas, I'm REALLY unable to login to SL now.

(And it is corrupt cache files, I got a notice that the SL cache file "A~NSISu_.exe" is corrupt.)

EDIT (again): I managed to log in again after a series of lengthy Chkdsk operations and messing with options, but I'm not sure how long it'll be till I may have problems again. We'll see.

Art and I are talking about this right now.

Art, I wish you a safe next login. I'll watch for your next post here, no matter what happens.

Well Chkdsk seemed to let me log in now, but now I notice i'm having problems with some of the bodyparts that I was wearing when this all started. My skin and eyes are now "bodypart/clothing not found in database" Which is a bummer since I had to pay for both of them and I liked them both lol.

Sounds like you might have a badly fragmented disc, or worse some bad sectors. Try running a 'full' scandisk and/or defrag.
